Windows server 2008 R2 problems with remote desktop + local login + installing Hyper-V

I have been searching for an answer for this and have tried a number of fixes suggested on different forums but am no closer to an answer.
I have a legal copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 with service pack 1. The server was working well until the last few days with no problems.
I updated the server and installed a linux machine via Hyper-V which I was able to connect to with no problems about 4 weeks ago.
I tried to remote desktop into the computer (from a windows 7 computer) but it gives the following error.
“The computer cant connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again, If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator.”
I have tried connecting to the computer using a computer on the same network, using both the name of the computer, the external IP address and the internal IP address all with the same issue. It connects enough to prompt for the password but then doesn’t connect. I have updated the password to exclude password expiration issues.
I also run plesk 11 on this server. The website pleskedu.co.nz is run through the server.
Trying to access plesk on the server using localhost:8443 will not allow the connection. The firewall settings are all correct to allow this.
Trying to ping the server. Internally I am able to ping the server using the internal IP address but using the external IP address which is port forwarded to this server gives no reply to ping even from the server itself.
Here are some of the things I have done.
I remove the virtual machine from the computer, removed the hyper-v role. I reinstalled hyper-v and reinstalled the machine. The virtual machine starts however when I try to connect to the virtual machine, it now wont connect to the server. I tried Hyper V manager and unchecked users and then typed the username and password in when prompted and got the error message again.
I have also deleted updates KB2667402 and KB2621440 and installed the newer versions of these updates.
I have used IISCrypto to update TLS 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 in the registry.
I have rolled back drivers for the graphics card.
I even tried to upgrade a copy of windows server 2012 and this went well until boot up when I got a critical process died blue screen a few times and then it rebooted back to the windows 2008 server.
Trouble shooting now says the diagnostic policy server is not running and I have therefore gone to services and stopped and restarted this server.
Updates were working well but now I am unable to update. I get the following message.
Error(s) found.:
Code 80072F8F Windows update encountered an unknown error.
I don’t want to have to reinstall windows from scratch.
The server is an HP Proreliant ML350p Gen 8.
In the log viewer Ifind then the Nework adaper Link Down is triggered often.
I tried running windows genuine advantage.
It states “code not available. The validation code could not be obtained. This may be due to technical difficulties, or you may be running an unsupported operating system. Please close this window and attempt the validation process again. Etc etc.”
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I have also run slmgr /dlv and all seems okay with this.
