Answered RDS 2012 vs 2008 R2 compatibility

    Couple of quick questions:

    1. If the TS role holding system goes down, will users still be able to remote into the system at least for a short period of time while we rebuild it? Even new users?

    2. If we install the role and CALs on one system and later want to move that role and CAL set to another system is that possible (2008 R2 for now).

    3. What CAL pack sizes are available for 2008 R2? I can't find this easily online as each reseller seems to have different sets?

    4. If you build a 2012 server with the RDS role and CALs, can 2008 R2 systems point to it as their license server?

    5. If I buy 10 CALs for a certain new system (A) and users and another system (B) comes online that has 5 users that need access to it, can I assign max CAL assignments so that there's always 10 available for the users of the first system (A) and 5 for the second (B)? Say for example the first 8 people log into system A. Then 5 log into system B. Then 2 more into system B but those are not the last 2 that need access to system A. Now when the last two users who need access to system B try to log into it, all 15 CALs would have been used up. Obviously we'll need 12 total anyway, but we want to make sure the 10 original users have one for when they access system A. Hope that made sense! :)

    Hi,

    Thanks for your post.

    1. If Terminal Server down, remote user cannot logon
    2. It’s supported. Check the below article.

Migrate Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licenses (RDS CALs)
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd851844.aspx

    3. Check this:

Client Access Licenses and Management Licenses
    http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/client-access-license.aspx#tab=3
    4. If your setup Server 2012 as a license server, it is support for Server 2008 R2 point it as a license server.

In addition, if you have any questions unclear, I suggest contacting Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center for detailed information. They are the best resource for such question. Your understanding is appreciated.

Thank you. Couple of quick follow ups:

    1. If you buy a 2012 CAL can you download 2008 R2 CALs so that they can be used on a 2008 R2 RDS role system?

    2. Can 2003, 2003 R2, 2008, and systems connect to 2012 RDS system? Likewise if we do a 2008 R2 RDS system can 2012 systems point to it?

    Hi,

    1. You can downgrade Windows Server 2012 CALs to Windows Server 2008 CALs.
    2. If you deployment Windows Sever 2012 Remote Desktop environment, you need a Windows Server 2012 License Server and Windows Server 2012 CALs. It cannot point to an earlier version License server and CALs.

    Aiden

THanks Aiden. I think I understand #1 but #2 is not so clear.

If on a 2012 build I install the RDS role, can 2003, 2003 R2, 2008, and 2008 R2 systems point to it as their RDS licensing server?

Likewise can I point a 2012 system to use the RDS Licensing server that is built using 2008 R2?

My guess is that the answer is yes to the first and no to the second.

    Hi,

    You are correct.

-> If on a 2012 build I install the RDS role, can 2003, 2003 R2, 2008, and 2008 R2 systems point to it as their RDS licensing server?

    Yes.

->  can I point a 2012 system to use the RDS Licensing server that is built using 2008 R2?

    No.

Have a quick follow up question:

If we buy 10 licenses today that don't have SA and 3 years from now we decide to buy 10 more licenses that do have SA (because we find out a new version is coming out), can they both be used on the same RDS server? Do they even know that some have SA and some don't? Just want to make sure we're complient without having to have separate RDS role servers depending on license type.

    Thanks!
