Answerproblem with a mouse in remote desktop.

    When I am opening a remote desktop session from a Vista Home 64 bit to XP or Windows 2003, I seeing a strange issue.
    I am not able to do any operation involving mouse movement with the left button clicked. Let's say I want to move a window. I am clicking on the window title and trying to move the window. Pointer is moving but window is not. Same for window resize, drag'n'drop, selecting, etc. It is very irritaiting and makes me using keyboard instead which is not always possible.
    Things like click, double click or just mouse movement are working fine. Locally on Vista box mouse is also working well. Also I see no issue when connecting e.g. from XP to the same Windows 2003 or vice versa.
    Mouse is just a regular USB one. Sure I tried restarting all the systems as well as connecting with both Full screen RDP and with a fixed resolution.

    Hi,

    I recommend you first make a backup copy of the profile, and then delete the user's profile.  Depending on your configuration and the applications you use, it should only take a few minutes to move files or recreate any lost settings.  Generally I recommend you keep profiles small, with most items redirected to a file server (desktop, documents, appdata, etc.).  The goal is to keep the profile small and as easily recreatable as possible.

    If the problem only occurs with one account it usually is not worth spending an extended amount of time trying to figure out the exact registry setting that has changed.  If this starts to happen frequently over time, then it may be worth the effort to determine the precise cause.

    Hi,

    I have not heard of this particular symptom occurring.  Because of this I am thinking it is related to the specific mouse or PC.

    1. Have you tried shutting down, plugging in a different make/model mouse, turning on your PC, then installing the mouse driver for the new mouse (if needed)?
    2. Have you updated the driver for your current mouse?
    3. Is the TS located on the local LAN, or is it at a remote location?  If it is remote, what kind of ping times do you see, and are they relatively steady, or do they vary greatly.
    4. Have you reversed the mouse buttons, or do you use the default configuration?  Do you have any custom mouse configuration options set?

    The driver is a Windows internal one. Windows is being updated automatically. Mouse is plug-n-play. Just plugged another one to another USB port and see the same issue.

    3.
    I have a local one as well as remote via VPN. Don't see any slowness.

    4.
    Everything is default. I tried reversing buttons and then I have a context menu on the left one and the right one is taking over the issue.

    I think the problem relates to Vista and RDP but not to the hardware/drivers. If I am using VNC instead of RDP everything looks good. I am thinking about downgrading the Vista RDP client.

    I found out that this is something related to a particular local account. I was able to start RDP using another accounts (not necessarily admin) with no issue. I tried to find and delete a corresponding registry key under hkey_current_user\software but didn't find any. I suppose I can delete a whole user profile although that would be an overkill.
