Answerserver 2008 terminal, handing out per device cals not user cals

I have a terminal server 2008 running in a work group.
it has valid usercals installed, along with per device cals (they got installed in the wrong setting)
I want it to hand out the per user cals, i've specified this in local policy but it is still handing out per device cals.

was hoping for a way to disable the per device cals, or leave them there unused, but most importantly start handing out the per user cals.
    any  help would be appreciated.

    Hi Allan,

Please check ALL servers on your network in order to make sure there are no servers that are in Per Device licensing mode--even if the servers are an older operating system.  It is possible that you have found a new bug of some sort, but I can tell you that in my experience over the years the only time Per Device licenses are issued is if there is a TS in Per Device mode.  You might want to try switching the TS license mode to Per Device, saving the change, then immediately switching it back to Per User using Terminal Services Configuration.

Is your TS Licensing Server installed on the same machine as your 2008 TS?

It is possible to deactivate your TS licensing server, shut it down, delete the license database, and then start fresh.  You will need your original license paperwork/auth#/license agreement#/etc., and then you can contact the Clearinghouse to reinstall your Per User TS CALs.

My fear is that if you get rid of the Per Device CALs by redoing the license server you are not solving the underlying problem.  That is, a server is requesting Per Device TS CALs.  If there are no Per Device CALs then the process will fail, which will ultimately lead to denied connections (after the temporary Per Device TS CAL expires).

My recommendation is to focus on solving the real problem.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

You do not need to remove the role--just TS licensing.  The way I have done this in the past I do not even remove TS licensing.  Deactivate your TS licensing server, stop the TS licensing service, delete the licensing database files in the lserver folder, start the TS licensing service (database will be recreated), activate your TS licensing server, install licenses.

NOTE: Having your licensing paperwork is critical before completing the above steps.

    Hi,

Per User TS CALs are only able to be tracked if the server is a member of a domain, and the other prerequistes are met.  Your TS licensing server will only issue Per Device TS CALs if there is a RDS/TS server in your environment that is in Per Device mode.

Please verify that your Terminal Server is set to Per User licensing mode in Terminal Services Configuration (tsconfig.msc).

    Thanks.

It is set up as per user liscencing mode.
liscense server dicovery m ode  is as specified
terminal services liscensing mode is per user.

if i uninstall terminal services completely and reinstall will i be able to use my same set of per user cals? then there shouldn't be a trace of the per device cals that keep getting handed out.

    ,Thanks
    Allan.

There are 2 servers on the workgroup, the terminal server, and a medent server.
medent server doesn't have the role installed.
