I have successfully set up the Server 2008 Enterprise Ed 64bit Core and can manage it from a Vista PC running Hyper-V Manager however I have to disable my Symantec Firewall in order for Hyper-V manager to work.  John Howards discussion of Hyper-V reote management seems to assume that Windows Firewall is being used and provides the command to open the proper ports without telling the reader what the ports actually are that need to be opened.  Can someone provide that information or provide a link to the discussion?

    Hi Vincent,

Thanks very much for your tip to contact my firewall vendors forum.  They gave me a list of programs that they thought needed to be allowed.  As it turned out, the firwall must have made automatic entries in the allowed port/application list but, for some reason or other, did not prioritize them properly.  Consequently, a higher priority denial blocked the necessary ports.  For any readers, the necessary ports/programs to allow are: port 135; C:\Windows\System32\wbem\unsecapp.exe; C:\Windows\System32\WUDFhost.exe; C:\Program Files\hyper-v\vmconnect.exe. I also added C:\Program Files\hyper-v\virtmgmt.msc but did not check to see if this can be removed yet.

Anyway, my problem is now solved and I thank you again for your assistance.

    Hi,

There is a guide for Server Core installation, you will be able to find all related operation on the guide.

By the way, there is another small tool you can use:

    Hi Vincent,

Thnaks very much for your directions.  There is a lot of really good information for me in these links.  I may not be looking at the right places but I still only seem to find references to handle Windows Firewall on the Hyper-V server and my problem is that I need to understand how to open the proper ports on my Vista PC where I am running a Symantec firewall. When I disable my Symantec firewall on the Vista PC I can run Hyper-V Manager but when the firewall is enabled, I get "RPC server unavailable.  Unable to establish communication between [hyper-v server] and [vista client]." I just need some port #'s to open on the Vista PC and the docs mentioned do not seem to site these ports.

    Hi,

To determine whether your program must use ports that are dynamically assigned by RPC, see the documentation provided by your program's vendor. You can also examine the traffic going to and from your program by using a network protocol analyzer such as Microsoft Network Monitor. You can download Network Monitor at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=94770. See the Network Monitor Links section in the left-hand column

For more information, you can refer to:

Step 4: Allowing Inbound Network Traffic that Uses Dynamic RPC
