Win2k8R2 Core Printer Server....does it have to be so difficult?

  Dear all,

  Built my first in the wild win2k8R2 server today! Way-Hey.....yup just took me two days!

  First problem was I changed the default locale and language to UK....now you would think that that would not cause too much of a problem?? Well...whenever I tried to install the remote management options from Sconfig, DISM kept crashing. I found a technet blog from a chap in Spain and he copied the en-US cab file to the Spanish language folder or something like that, not really wanting to be too specific....it got me thinking because another Technet blog said Microsoft recommended a rebuild! Any way the tall and short of it is, if you change the locale to UK, DISM will crash, if you take the USA locale default options DISM works...weyhey!!! Cost me a lot of time finding that out!!

  Next problem...I tried to install the printer role using DISM, it failed, I thought I'll see if there is a Powershell option...GET-FEATURE according to Microsoft there are Server Manager CMDlets, eh....looked for the ones mentioned in the Technet articles...and....no sign of them on the server I just installed and OS patched!! then I found a link that said do...dism /online /get-features (this apparently enables something!!!)  after that all the DISM features I added worked!

  So now I have a Printer Server built on Win2k8R2 Core....lets see if I can manage roles with Server Manager....eh....yup...looks like I cannot manage roles remotely!

  Just wondered if anyone else is seeing similar things?

  And I hope Microsoft dont put any of this stuff anywhere near an exam until they get what the documentation says they can do with what actually works!!
