Silverlight: 2 - WSUS - Windows Server 2008 Core
-
Tuesday, October 21, 2008 5:37 AM2 Months ago I reported that Silverlight was being offered by WSUS for Server Core and on the 15th of this month I added a comment to the same thread to ensure that this would not be the case when Silverlight 2 KB 957938 gets pushed through WSUS.
Surprise! (Or not :P) - Silverlight 2 is being offered by WSUS to Server 2008 Core.
And what the following the statement in KB957938 means is anyone's guess:-
Silverlight 2 contains an auto-updating mechanism. By default, this mechanism is disabled in the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) package.

Friday, October 24, 2008 5:09 PMOwnerHi,
Sorry, I must have missed your earlier posts. I'm talking with the Silverlight team to figure out why this is happening as it certainly shouldn't be.
Thanks,

I thought from the previous post 2 months ago (1st link in my above post) that Laura Zhang had passed this onto the WSUS/Silverlight/ServerCore teams and this would not happen again, the only way to keep WSUS 'looking clean' is to now 'Decline Silverlight 2' as I cannot decline it for only a single WSUS group.
So everyhting (except 2 Vista machines from today's critical update) are 'All Green & OK' except now the three server core machines will stay that way waiting with '1 Needed Update' until either the WSUS Update for Silverlight 2 is revised and re-published or I decline Silverlight 2 for my entire WSUS Server.

You originally changed this question to a comment which I had to revert, now you marked my last post as the answer, it is not the answer to the question and until Microsoft supply an answer to this question with a resolution to the problem it will remain unanswered.

Monday, November 03, 2008 9:50 PMOwnerHi,
We have gotten to the bottom of this, the Silverlight update is using the wrong detection mechanism. This results in it applying to Vista and greater, which includes Server Core. We are working with the update team to provide the right detection mechanism to prevent this from happening.

For those of you watching at home you will need to remember that if Silverlight updates are being issued to any part of your network infrastructure and you have Windows Server 2008 Core connected to the same WSUS Server distributing the updates you will always have one update required for your Server Core machines until the teams can push out a new revision of Silverlight or an update for the WSUS detection is released.

Tuesday, November 04, 2008 7:57 PMSilverlight is also trying (and failing) to install to a Windows 2000 machine that I have on my network. It's KB 957938. Would you please fix this so it no longer tries to install to Windows 2000 Workstation?

This was supposed to have been fixed. I'm trying to find out what is going on with these.

I lay the blame directly with the WSUS team as it is more than just the Silverlight team, I see 'many' issues with WSUS be it Exchange Server, SQL, Visual Studio, Windows Live and many other updates that simply fail any form of QA process and are deployed to WSUS without proper testing. It typically is language specific, i.e. only 'English Updates' that can blow out from 60MB to 1.3GB and the fact that Silverlight is still being thrown to Server Core as an update is sad that the WSUS team have not worked out a solution for this, some may call this a bug, some may say it is a slight oversight, I say it is a lack of Quality Assurance Testing on Microsoft's part.
With Silverlight 3 just announced at MIX09 the issue now will be when Silverlight 3 first gets published to WSUS if the products it applies to actually fixes this issue and does not report that it is needed for 'Server Core' then the previous Silverlight 2 updates will NOT be superseeded by this update for Server Core and Server Core will continue to report that it needs the Silverlight 2 updates until an update to WSUS is released that 'supersedes' the Silverlight 2 update requirements for Server Core.
So the WSUS team need to release a hotfix for the WSUS, Server Core and Silverlight issue in advance to even thinking about publishing Silverlight 3 to WSUS otherwise Server Core will continue wanting the SL2 updates OR it will report that Server Core needs the SL3 update.

Has there been a resolution to this? I still get Silverlight continually offered to Servers, including Server Core.

Hello,
I know this thread is almost 4 years old, but Silverlight still shows up in WSUS on server core and hyper-v server. Will there ever be a solution or do we just have to decline those updates.

We have three Server 2012 (Core) Servers which want to install Microsoft Silverlight (KB2668562).
Two other Server 2012 (GUI) have no Silverlight installed but are reporting this KB as missed too.Is there any solution for that?

Putting my request in too, WSUS shows Silverlight updates as "needed" for my 2003 and 2008 servers even though Silverlight is not installed on them, nor do I want it to be installed on them.
