FSRM Problem - Windows Server 2008 Standard
Hello,
We installed one DC server from scratch (Windows Server 2008 Standard); and we use it as a file server also because we are a small company with small number of staff..
The issue we are facing is when we tried to start FSRM.. We followed the installation guides step by step.. The needed roles and features have been added, but it didn’t work at all.. We keep receiving the below error message whenever we try to open the File Server Resource Manager:
“Unable to connect to FSRM on computer \\ServerName. This can happen if the remote computer does not have the Windows Server 2008 or later version of FSRM installed, or if a connection cannot be established because it was blocked by windows Firewall.
Choose ‘connect to another computer’ to manage a different computer running Windows Server 2008 or later.”
Actually, we are trying to run FSRM locally, so the remote thing doesn’t apply here. We tried everything including turning off windows firewall but the problem is still there..
How can we fix it?
Thanks in advance..

Hi hanankz,
From the screenshot of error message, I suspect that the File Server Resource Manager service role may be not installed properly.
Can you please open Server Manager to double-check it?
1. Go to File Service role.
2. Add Role services.
3. If the File Server Resource Manager installed properly, it should be show as followed.

If not, please select it and install it and then test to see if the issue can be fixed.Hope it helps.

Hi hanankz,
This issue seems to be unusall.
How did you open the File Server Resource Manager? Did you just click it in Administrative Tools on the DC?
Please verify that the File Server Resource Manager service role has been installed on the DC.
Meanwhile, please test to see if the error message will still occur if you can open FSRM with MMC.
Step:
1. Start -> Run -> MMC
2. Add/Remove Snap-in..
3. Select File Server Resource Manager
4. Click Add button5. Please check if you can expand the Quota Management node and File Screening Management node.
If the error message still appear, please take a screenshot of it and send to us via tfwst@microsoft.com

Thanks for the answer.. Yes, we open it by clicking File Server Resource Manager under Administrative Tools.
We installed it by enabling File Services role and File Services Tools feature..
And I tried the MMC procedure.. The same error is there.. I am going to send you snapshots about the issue..

- Hello David,
Thnks for the tip.. It helped me to figure out where I went wrong.. I uninstalled the FSRM roles and features as you told me, then during their re-installation I figured out that I have to choose FSRM in the Role Services under File Service role group. I didn't notice the Role Services branch during the first installation..
Now it works just fine. Thanks a million.
