Lets say we have a few computers with Windows XP, one Windows Server 2008, and a few MacBooks connected to our local network thru a router.

With the macbooks we can see all the computers in the network, and if we want to connect to our Windows Server 2008 its just to click it and it will ask for Us ID and Password, but how can we connect our XP computers to the server?

We would like to use the server for Backup, and Sharing documents.
If its possible we would like to assign different privileges to different users, we are aware of that in Server 2008 we can create "Users", but how will this integrate with the XP computers?

I feel the issue is we are not sure how we can connect to it, see it, or access it with our XP computers.

Sorry if this question is beginner level, but I really googled and searched this forum, but no luck.

    hi Martindahlgren,

Can you please try configure the security option on Windows Server 2003 file server?

    1. Gpedit.msc
    2. expand to:

    Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts     set to: Guest only - local users authenticate as Guest

    3. reboot the server

Meanwhile, please also verify that the local Guest account is enable on Windows Server 2008.

    1. Server manager
    2. Local Users and Groups
    3. Enable Guest accoutn

Then you may try to acces the file server from windows XP client.

    Hope it helps.

Seams to work out just great!

    Thnx a lot.

And what if I want different People to have different rights to view folders that are shared on the server?

On a MacBook it will ask you if you want to Log On as either "Guest" or "Registered User".

How does this work out with our Windows XP computers, how do we let our different Windows XP users access different (or different rights regarding view/read/write) shared folders.
