Situation: New install of Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise on a new server box. Successfully got Windows OS installed, and DNS/Active Directory installed and configured. Huzzah, and thank the gods for internet search engines.
Next step is to configure the network router, a Linksys WRT54GL, and there is the problem. When I fire up Internet Explorer on the server console, it loads the MSN home page fine (left the default page unchanged for testing). When I enter the router IP address (192.168.1.1) in the IE's URL bar (to log in to the router and run its config), I get a Windows username/password popup window. I type in the Administrator user name and the admin password, but the window just pops up again, and again and again, and IE never connects to the router. The Administrator account is the only one on the server at present; no other logins have been created. The popup window is *not* the Linksys login window shown in the Linksys docs; that one requires a blank username and a default password listed in the Linksys docs.
Is this a rights issue? I would have thought Adminstrator has default rights to do everything. I am not a network admin pro, just helping out a friend, and this one has me stumped.
If specific configuration information is needed, I am happy to provide it, and will be grateful for any illumination offered.
