I am trying to get Server 2008 x64 (r1) to act as a KMS server for Windows 7, enterprise agreement.

The server has SP 2 installed.

I have changed the product key to KMS Server 2008 r2 x64 and the server has activated.

When I run update  KB968912-v2-x64 I receive:  'The Update does not apply to your system'

If i try and and install Windows 7 KMS key with (actual key omitted):

    slmgr -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

I receive error 0xC004F050, I have checked the key for typo errors.

    slmgr -dlv shows

    Software licensing service version: 6.0.6002.18112

    VOLUME_KMS_R2_B channel

The _VLMCS record is registered in DNS for this server

The server on which I am trying to run KMS from (Server 2008 x64( r1)) is activated: this is confirmed in System properties. It is the Windows 7 key that does not install when I run slmgr -ipk

    Hi,

you cannot install the product key for Win7 KMS onto a ServerOS. Also, it's not necessary to do so, since a ServerOS-based KMShost, will issue activations for WindowsClient (WinVista/Win7/Win8) if the correct KMShost product key and KMS hostpack is installed.

If your WinServer2008 OS is correctly activated using KMShost pkey, then you are ready to activate both ServerOS and ClientOS.

[because a KMShost pkey performs two functions: (a) it enables KMShost behaviour, (b) it activates the OS of the KMShost itself.. therefore the KMShost pkey must match the OS of the KMshost itself. This is why a Win7 KMShost pkey cannot be installed to WinServerOS - a Win7 KMShost pkey can only be installed to a KMShost that is itself running Win7]
