If I ran the Windows Server 2003 SP2 executable, will it reinstall the OS and override the existing files?  Would my third party programs remain on the system?

The Service Pack only updates existing OS files.  Most of the time your 3rd party progams will work without issue, but you may need to read the SP realease notes to looke for known issues.

As Gunner999 mentioned only the required files and the new files which are bundled in the SP are replaced and copied , there will no effect / replacement to either of any 3rd party .sys files / .exe files / .dll files.

"So if I repair the installation using the original Windows Server 2003 CD, would I just reinstall SP1 and SP2?" --Repair doesnt install servicepacks , you need to update the OS using windows update / any patch managment software ( SMS / LANDESk , ALTIRIS ) etc...

I put the Windows Server 2003 CD in the drive, however, I was not prompted for any type of reinstallation/repair.  So I am not sure how to go about reinstalling/repairing the system.  My system is failing a lot, and I need to reinstall the OS files.  Should I just boot the system up to the desktop and place the CD in the drive?

    Hi,,

    Thank you for the reply.

The following steps are written for reinstalling Windows XP but reinstalling Windows Server 2003 is similar:

    1. Make sure you have set your CD-ROM as the first priority boot device. You may refer to your computer manual for information on how to do this.

    2. Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM and reboot your computer.

    3. When you see "Press any key to boot from CD…" on the screen, press a key to let your computer boot from the Windows XP CD.

    4. When the computer boots from the CD-ROM, it will check your hardware and then prompt you the following options.

    * To set up Windows XP now, press Enter.

    * To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

    * To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Please press Enter. (Note: please do not press R at this step)

    5. Press the F8 key to agree the Licensing Agreement.

    6. You will see your current Windows XP installation listed in a box and get the following options:

    * To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

    * To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press Esc.

    Please press "R".

    7. Then the setup program will reinstall Windows XP automatically.

After reinstalling Windows XP, you may need to re-activate it.
