Are there any free healthcheck scanners for windows server 2008 (file servers) to identify potential risks to the server, i.e. with capacity, performance, availability, liscences etc. That can be reported out in a management freindly report for archiving. To aid an admin who could perhaps run the reports each day or at least once per week to identify issues without having to check areas manually. I know for vsphere there is a tool called vcheck with is very useful, just wondered if there was similar for windows server.

Microsoft has provided tools that does a scan of your system on different levels, giving you reports that will state the areas that needs attention based on their own best practice. - They are quite useful in a situation like the one you describe.
Attack Surface Analyzer, Microsoft Security Assessment Tool, Risk and Health Assessment Program. - There are properly more from Microsoft.

    Is Vcheck is free tool?

I don't think so any free tool available to monitor server health check. But there is an option, write custom-made scripts and run it on regular basis to know server health status.

or else if budget permits, Go for any system center tools like SCCM or SCOM. These tools are very useful in all the aspects.
