Avast scans on Microsoft Windows Vista issue

Hi,
I have a Windows Vista computer and am attempting to run a full system scan with Avast to detect any threats/viruses. Unfortunately, the past several attempts I've tried this has the laptop frozen approximately 20 minutes into the scan, both when I just have Avast up and when I'm searching the Internet while the scan's in progress. How can I complete a full Avast scan without freezing? I also tried it in regular Safe Mode but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! I'm not 100% certain what version of Vista I have so here are some numbers that can be of assistance:
BRAND: Toshiba
PART NUMBER: PSCOYU-007008
If you require additional info, let me know.

Hello,
What I would recommend is that you do a clean boot to check that Avast is not in a conflict with another program: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796/en-us
If this does not help, I would recommend contacting Avast Technical support or asking in their forums for assistance: http://forum.avast.com/
This also may be due to compatibility issues with Windows Vista.
