Ran into a very troubling problem.  Had users reporting the temporary profile message when they logged into a server 2008 system.  I had run into this issue in the past when someone trying to free up space manually deleted the profiles under the c:\users\ directory.  There was only one profile under the system properties >> advanced >> user profiles so I deleted that profile and then navigated to the profileList registry key to remove the troublesome entries and have the users log back in and rebuild their profile but!....the profileList key was completely empty!  I am unsure what to do at this point.  Also when I try to create a new folder anywhere on the file system it gives the error: "The file or folder does not exist."  This also occurs when trying to rename files or folders.  Unfortunately shadow copies were not being used and the server hosts mission/business critical services such as dns, dhcp, as well as other software that users must access and use everyday.  Taking the system down is a possibility but reloading the OS and grabbing backups is almost not an option.  Does anyone have experience with this?  What do I do!?  Much, much thanks and millions of kudos to whomever can lend a helping hand.

Is this a domain controller? Why are users logging onto a server hosting these roles? I'd probably stand up another, migrate the roles over and rebuild this one. It really isn't worth the trouble to try fixing something like what you've mentioned.

Oh man brother, I know!...I've been preaching to my clients with setups like this to purchase a standalone RDP Server but just like you can lead a horse to water and not get them to drink, you can lead management to data integrity and security but not get them to spend the money.  This is a DC and we have another 2008 server that only acts as a fax server we could promote and migrate these services to but the only problem doing this really is we have a software system in which the software company will not allow me or anyone to install their software but them, they remote in and install it for you, for a mere fee of $1000.00...It's hard as heck to make a sale on a 3000.00 server when it costs 1000.00 to install a software system...Do you think there are other options I might pursue?  Maybe a repair/update install? Thanks for the help

Yes, you can do a repair install but I'd be a little nervous essentially doing without a net.

    Hi,

About the error:"The file or folder does not exist".

You can try the steps listed under "Let me fix it myself".

"The file or folder does not exist" error in Windows Vista

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949109

Important:This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

    Hope this helps!

    Regards.
