server 2012 going to be to complex for a home server

  That depends entirely on your skills and experience with Server 2012. And of course, what you want to use it for. You may find that Server 2012 Essentials is more appropriate as a home server than the Standard version, bu again, that depends on your intended usage.

  Hello,

  Erik is correct here, so the question is what are you trying to achieve with the "Homeserver"? What should be installed on it, server roles, applications etc?
