Can Windows Server 2008 run on 2013 CAL?

Dear Sir,
I have an enquiry on Microsoft Server Client Access License. My office current server is running on Windows Server Standard 2008 R2, and my volume license is going to expire soon.
Therefore, I asked my previous reseller to help me renew the license, but was given Windows Server 2012 and Exchange Server 2013 CAL license. I was told that version 2008 and exchange 2010 is no longer in the market.
So I would like to ask whether can my current version of server run the new CALS which is newer than my server? Do I need to upgrade my Windows Server and Exchange server to 2012 and 2013 respectively in order to use the new CALs? Please advise.
Thank you.

I would call MS licensing to be sure. I'am not sure your reseller was rigth about that. (I still see Win2008 CAL and Exchange 2010 CAL being sell where I work (and even 2003 -- I talk about CAL, not the software))
Call (800) 426-9400 Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM Pacific Standard Time, or find an authorized reseller.
