The .NET Framework 1.1 was made available in a downloadable package for various operating systems and it was also shipped as a part of Windows Server 2003.  Meaning, during the installation of Windows Server 2003, .NET 1.1 gets installed.

The support lifecycle information for the .NET Framework 1.1 states that it exits support on 10/8/2013.

The support lifecycle information for Windows Server 2003 states that it exits support on 7/14/2015.

I am looking for confirmation that the .NET Framework 1.1 bits that come with the Windows Server 2003 will continue to be supported throughout the Windows Server 2003 lifecycle.  I cannot imagine that something ships with the OS would would have a different lifecycle OS itself.

Is my understanding accurate that the standalone .NET 1.1 package that can be downloaded and installed on various versions of Windows (that do not already included it ie. Windows 2003) exits support on 10/8/2013, but on Windows Server 2003, as a part of Windows Server 2003, it will follow the Windows Serer 2003 lifecycle, which exists support on 7/14/2015?

    Here is the answer:

We always honor the lifecycle of the underlying .Net Framework bits for any bits shipping in the OS box, even if the published lifecycle for the .Net version happens to be shorter.

.NET 1.1 SP1 shipped in Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86 (but did not ship in the OS for x64 and ia64), so we currently ship one patch for Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86 and ship a second patch for all the other platforms supported by .NET 1.1 SP1 where customers install the stand-alone .NET 1.1 redist.

For the 2 year period when .NET 1.1 SP1 is out of extended support but Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86 is still in support we will continue shipping the OS patch but will stop shipping the second (MSI) patch for the redist. So customers running Windows Server 2003 SP2 x86 will still be supported for .NET 11. SP1 security issues for the entirety of the OS lifecycle, but .NET 1.1 SP1 as a standalone product will not be supported after 10/8/2013 on any platforms where the bits did not ship in the OS.
