UPS attached to server - shutdown software

I'm sure we've all reached that frustration point trying to get something working. Just a few months ago I purchased a new TrippLite SMART2200VS SmartPro UPS for my Windows Server 2008R2 Dell server. I have struggled to get the shutdown on power failure to work, but the included software called PowerAlert runs as a service and it just dies soon after starting it. TrippLite support swears it will run on 2008R2, but it isn't running on mine. It came with 2 USB, and 2 serial ports.
The only logging I could find on it was that a Windows event 7034, stating the service stopped expectantly. And the log file shows: "Failed to initialize SNMP port 3664: Error code -21"
Tripplite support has not been helpful. I have the firewall turned OFF, there is no anti-virus software running. I am wondering if there might be some default Windows policy setting that is preventing a service from using that port. A netstat -ano shows no other uses of that port.
Can anyone think of a reason why the service would "Fail to initialize SNMP port 3664"

Do a netstat -ano, and check if the port 3664 is in use. If yes, check the PID and identify what service use it. After change it, or if you can't then you have a decision to make.
If no port 3664 is in use, then the software is bugged, try a older's build maybe. If they can't help you on that change your UPS.

Thanks for the tips, I sure do appreciate them. I have checked to make sure port 3664 was not in use with netstat several times and it isn't. I also went into Services and started the only SNMP service I could find, called SNMP Trap, that was set to manual. I changed that to automatic. Nothing has helped so far.
Since the PowerAlert shutdown software uses 32bit Java, I wonder if some security rule is preventing it opening that 3664 port.
At this point I would like to just change the UPS for anything that worked, but this unit is new and costs around $600. It should be able to do what they claim. The support ticket has been open for months now so I don't know if the vendor will take it back. I know Tripplite has already stated they won't do anything and refers me to vendor. It's been very disappointing support.

Hello Oregonbob,
do you have SNMP Trap service only ? Don't you have SNMP Service (so you don't have SNMP installed on the machine) ?Could you check if your UPS software requires SNMP Service ? Did you already ask to UPS support for information about the SNMP error ? ...Maybe they already know about the issue.
Bye,
Luca

Friday, February 15, 2013 2:47 AMIf the port 3664 is not in use and the software can't bind to that, check under what user account the service is set to use. Set it to local system's account.
