Dear Experts,
Quick question:
I have windows 2000 DC in my setup and this is the ONLY DC I have, For something new in our environment I need to add a windows 2003 R2 as additional DC, I have a question can I add Windows 2003 R2 as additional DC to existing Windows 2000 Domain ? then finally can I make the newly installed Windows 2003 R2 DC as my primary DC ?Please note it is not for adding Windows 2003 R2 as member server, but as a additional DC
Waiting for response.
Thanks,

Monday, March 18, 2013 10:45 AMTo add a windows 2003r2 dc, you need to update the forest and domain schema. After you add the new dc, you can transfer the fsmo roles to the new dc. As long as you have the windows 2000 dc, you can't raise the forest en domain level.

You may want to consider moving towards at least 2008 or better yet 2012. Extended support for 2003 R2 ends in 7/2015. While that may seem like you have quite a bit of time, it will be here before you know it.

First of all, there is no primary and secondary DCs. All DCs are RW except RODCs.
You need to proceed like the following:
- Upgrade to AD 2003: http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2003_adprep.htm
- Introduce the new DC and make it a DNS and GC server
- Transfer FSMO roles to the new DC: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504/

Yes , you can do this.
Steps i can recommend:
-------------------------------
- Join 2003 Server to the domain and once this is done perform forest Prep and domain Prep on 2000 server.
- This Will Extend you schema.
- Now come back to 2003 server and Start promoting it as Additional domain controller.
- Now start transferring the roles one by one to New server.
- Once all the roles are moved to you New server it will be the FSMO holder in your organization.
Please reply back if you need any further information on this.
