General DiscussionWindows Server 2008 shared services disconnect over time or when idle

I have a number of Windows server 2008 servers installed and they all have a common problem.  I use a logon script to connect a number of shared folders to the local PC clients.  They are a mix of Windows XP Pro SP2 and Vista.  All the available updates are included on the servers and workstations.

The problem is that these services appear to disconnect when idle or after a period of time.  There is no exact time involved it is all over the place.  However it is usually when the connection has been Idle for some time.  In explorer or my computer you can see a red cross besides the connections.  Clicking the resource results is the speedy reconnecting of the service.

However I still have a problem in that I use PST files with outlook and these are stored on the file server network drives.  When these connections drop out Outlook does not recover the connection.  But rather displays a message indicating that the PST file is not accessible.  It would seem that the PST files are at some risk as the system often has to scan the files to check the integrity of the files.  The chance of breaking a file is not good and must be avoided.

When the files were stored on Windows Server 2003 servers this issue was not occurring or on Windows Server 2000.

What has changed on Windows server2008 and how can it be fixed.  This is supposed to be a reliable platform and this is not supposed to happen.

If anyone has solved this issue please can they share the fix?

    Regards and thanks Tom Ridgeway

No real solution however over time and installing the updates there seems less of an impact.

The biggest issue I have is with clients on outlook loosing thier connection to server based PST files.  You need to restart outlook from time to time

But no no fix so far if you find one I wopuld be greatfull

Microsoft have been non responsive on this as well

Good luck I am just learning to live with it for now

I had a problem like this, not exactly.
In my case DFS is on a 2003 datacenter and the 2008 server contribute shares.
The servers communicated also with IPv6 (between servers), while the workstations only used IPv4.
Disabling IPv6 on the server machines gave us our shares back without time-out's.
