I'm currently taking my CCNA and am in my first year. I got a Bpa comptetion coming up in 2 weeks after that was going to focus on powershell but would it be a better idea to focus on a server platform first? If so should I go 2012 2008 or 2008 r2 also I do have a class dealing with windows server 2012 right now but it's platform is based on that I already have messed around with a server platform which I have not. If you guys think by focusing on a sever platform in my free time right now any idea on where is the best online learning for it?

As to what is best for you to learn right now, simply go with whatever your interests are. For online learning, have a look through this blog post http://blogs.technet.com/b/keithmayer/archive/2012/07/02/windows-server-2012-jump-start-technical-training-videos-now-available-ws2012.aspx#.URg13EhbB-Y

The differences between these products are not so significant that your skills on one would not generalise to the other. You're probably better off with Server 2012 in my opinion.

I would agree with Nigel however, not completely ! Not every organisation is using WS 2012 at present. That being said, a system admin need to have some hands on experience on WS 2008 and WS 2008 R2 as well, knowledge on WS 2003 is an added advantage.

When it comes to Windows Server administrastion, there are again branches viz: AD, Exchange, Lync, System Center Products, Sharepoint, Cloud computing (Hyper-V) etc...

To start with, I would suggest you to create a test lab on your own; maybe using Oracle VM Virtual box or VMware Workstation and practice on different Operating Systems and various products.

Technet Virtual Labs are one of the free and best resources which you might want to take adavantage of.

My biggest thing is to try to find information for someone just starting out with servers. I know there is a significant amount of data for people already using them, but when just starting out these might be confusing at first.

In my opinion, you might want to start with WS 2008 R2 and then move on to WS 2012.
