Cross-platform upgrades x86 to x64 or vice-versa are not supported.

You need to install Windows 2008 R2 on the 64-bit supported new server.  Run the schema update then promote the server to Additional domain controller after that transfer the fsmo roles to the new server check every thing is working fine then move ahead for decommission the old DC.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Where will schema update ?

Is it in Windows 2003 32 DC ?

Can we run Windows 2003 32 bit DC and Windows 2008 R2 64 DC in same in environment?

    Kindly comment for this.

Schema update is forest wide since you only have windows 2003 32bit server it will be on that server until new server added to domain.

Make you are running on "windows server 2003" functional level. Insert 2008 r2 DVD on 2003 server -- navigate to DVD "support" folder through admin command prompt -- run "adprep32 /forestprep" -- then run "adprep32 /domainprep /gpprep". Now you can install server 2008 r2 64bit on another server and transfer FSMO roles to new server.

And yes, you can have Windows 2003 32bit and Windows 2008 r2 64bit DCs in the same environment.

    Dear pateljy

    Now Iam totally confused.

    Some AD admins said...

    *******************

No need to  do anything in current DC. (I mean Windows 2003 32-bit)

Just install windows 2008 R2 64 bit and run dcpromo and do an ADC.

All  schema update will do automatically.

Then promote as DC and depromote old one.

    Is it correct?

Could you please give good migration plan of Windows 2003 32 to Windows 2008 R2 64

Also DNS also running in same machine.

    Thanks in advance.

Ashraf, you can do just that. Install server 2008 r2 64bit and run dcpromo and schema will update automatically. You can update schema beforehand by doing previous step. Not much difference in both steps. Only updating schema beforehand you can assure schema update was successful and give enought time to replicate.

For the migration plan you can follow either steps to promote new DC. I would suggest that you install DNS with DC promotion. Verify DNS registration, functionality and replication. Remove GC from old server, and make new server GC and move all FSMOs roles to new DC. run DCdiag and NETdiag to make sure that communication between domain, network and other domain controllers are OK befere you move for old DC decommision process.

After all roles and GC removed from old server and DC and DNS functionality verified, make sure clients DNS are pointing to new DNS server. I would suggest wait few days and test everything before you run DC demotion process on old server. after AD uninstall, remove server object from AD sites and services if not already removed.

I don't think you can run dcpromo directly without running adprep32 first. I beleive you will get an error telling you to run adprep32 first to update the forest and domain schema.

So schema update is mandatory  in existing DC first right?

    Thanks
