Server Service on a domain controllers stopping after Service Pack 2 was applied
- We have a domain controller that we applied Service Pack 2 (windows 2008), after that was done after about 3 days the "server service" stops. The logs do not tell us anything. Is there any post-SP2 Windows 2008 for this?

Hi,
Before checking the crash dump file, please export the Application and System events from the event viewer on the server and upload to me. I would like to check if there is any related information logged in the event viewer.
Please understand that Forum is not a best resource to help you analyze dump file. If we need to analyze the crash dump file to locate the exact problem, I suggest that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for instant assistance.

- We opened a case with PSS and they said this is a known issue with Service Pack 2 and NPS running on the server. We had to place NPS using it's own svchost.exe. Microsoft will be coming out with an hotfix for this issue.

- Hello,
shouldn't be SP2, i have it installed some weeks ago and mine is running as always. What error do you get when you are trying to start it?

- We are getting no errors, the "Server Service" just stops after 3-4 days of runtime, then you can restart the service with no problems. This only started to occur after SP2 was applied to the server.

hi there,
possible suspects are
a) 3rd party application intervention to server service such as ( AV , backup applications etc..)
b) Malware / virus attack
I would suggest you to check the behavior in safe mode , if safe mode is not feasible , make sure you use msconfig and disable all the 3rd party services and check if the server service is stoppingAlso please provide
a) how frequently does the issue occur
b) what is teh error message you get
c) what account does your server service using

Hi,
Thank you for your post.
In this case, I suggest that you perform a full virus scan on the computer. If the computer is not infected by virus, please perform a clean boot and check if the issue goes away. To perform a clean boot on Windows Server 2008 machine, please refer to the Step 1 in the following article (the step can also applies to Windows Server 2008):

If the issue persists, please collect a MPSReport on the computer for further research:
1. Download the executable file from the following URL specific to the computer.

3. After the tool finishes gathering the information, copy the cab file from the following folder:C:\WINDOWS\MPSReports\SETUPPerf\cab

- The server service crashed again. The SetupPerf did not run on the Windows 2008 server. Virus came back clean.

- hi there,
at this stage , its good to have a crash dump of the service for further analysis, so that we get an understanding of which thread is causing the issue / whcih application might be causing the issue.
let us know your convinience.

- I would have to agree, let me add SCOM 2007 is reporting high DNS usage on this DC/DNS in our environment, maybe that has something to do with it. Is there anything in terms of DNS (security or Post-sp2 fixes)?

hi there,
this is difficult to predict without data, answer for your question might be yes and no.
If SCOM is making any of the pipe / namepipe connection then it will pass through server service.
If the answer is No: then you are facing potentially 2 issues.
Please check the behavior in safe mode and revert back

Can you elaborate on placing NPS using it's own svchost.exe? My server service on my 2008 server w/sp2 is stopping with "The Server service terminated with service-specific error 2182 (0x886)."
I also have NPS running on this server.- Proposed As Answer bySoftware 1,2,3,4,5 Help Wednesday, September 09, 2009 6:30 PM
- Here is what commands they gave me, so far we had no crashes:
sc config IAS type= own
net stop ias & net start ias
This will place nps in it's own svchost.exe so it will not crash the server service.- Proposed As Answer byKJohnsonCDA Monday, July 13, 2009 2:09 PM
- It has been almost 2 weeks and no crashes so I think that fixed our server service
