Windows 2008 Server / Windows 2008 R2

Saturday, February 09, 2013 8:05 PMHi
We have some application servers running on different OS's....some are running on Windows 2008 Server Enterprise and some on Windows 2008 Server R2.
The vendor supports both OS's, so there is no issue there....but I often find it's better to keep to one for the sake of any issues.
I know that R2 has more features than the Enterprise edition, but is there any real difference in the OS that would make much of a difference to apps running on the server?

Hi
Generally speaking it's a bad idea not to patch your OS with the most recent updates. Yes, you risk sometimes as an "early adopter" but in your case it's YEARS passed already. There should be no issues with non-R2 -> R2 migration unless software you use is real broken (know some crazy titles EOL-ed by vendors non-working with SP2 and so on).

Probably not. 2008 is vista based kernel 32/64 bit while R2 is 7 based kernel and only 64 bit.

Thanks both.
To add to the Dave's point, if the Kernerls are different between the two OS's, then that -IS- a significant difference? We could potentially have problems on one (e.g. R2) that we don't have on the other, and vice-versa?

Possibly if they're 32 bit and run in syswow but the vendor should know about that.
