    Hi,

     I'm my production setup we have 4 nodes Hyper-V failover cluster with Windows 2008 R2 Data center edition.

    we have nearly 40 to 50 guest machines are there. we are planning to implement new DR site. I'm looking for hyper-V DR recommended hyper-v solution. need advice from experts.

    If you're willing to have VM replication with a multiple recovery points now you may look at VEEAM Hyper-V backup. Here:

    StarWind Backup Essentials provide close functionality for a fraction of cost (SMB friendly). Here:

    and if you're not short in time and can wait to put this stuff into production you may check upcoming VM Replica thing from Hyper-V 3.0. More here:

    (there's a step-by-step PDF on how to use it on MS site BTW but it's too overloaded with details).

    The only "questionable" feature from VM Replica I see - you really need to have Windows Server 8 / Hyper-V 3.0 at the other side and not generic iSCSI or CIFS/SMB or NFS or some cloud provider. I see MS needs to sell more Server 8 licenses but relaxing restriction on destination (I'm OK with no failover, I just need DR and not more) could increase popularity greatly! IMHO of course.

    for fullfill your requirement you can use some third party softwares.

    Steel-eye

    arcserver

    also you can backup virtual machines using ms dpm 2010 and this dpm server can backup to the dr site using another dpm 2010 server.but in case of a server failure you have to restore those server to the hyper-v host/s

    in next version of ms server(8) you can synchronize virtual machiens to the another hyper-v host.it doesnt need any license kind of a this.

     thanks for the reply. if we talk about third part software double take is super tool for DR solution. but i cannot use double take for this setup.

    Production i'm using backend storage is HPEVA 8000 and DR HP EVE 4000 . we may planning for storage replication . but still i have doubt about the hyper-v cluster. 

    in VM ware easily we can do the storage replication and Vmotion. but i'm not sure how hyper-v work in that scenario.

    I don't think replicating LUNs instead of a VMs is a very good idea. You're locking yourself inside hardware vendor.

    Hello,

    You actually have a few options.  In 2008 R2, you can configure DPM to backup the virtual machines and replicate to another DPM server at the failover site.  This is a really nice way to get a validated state of a virtual machine at the other site.  Also, you could look into third party replication products as another current solution.

    I think the best solution is coming in Windows 8.  Check out Hyper-V replica and what it can do out of box!

    Adding  to  Nathan's  commentary on options available in  Windows  Server  "8" -  Hyper-V  Replica allows you to replicate virtual machines from one server/cluster to another  -  across sites.
