Slow SMB copy from VM to Host Hyper-V R2

Answered Slow SMB copy from VM to Host Hyper-V R2

Machine: HP BL680c G5 blades. (They are up-to-date in their Firmwares and drivers.)

    OS: Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter CORE.

The issue that we have is network traffic contention.

If we perform a SMB copy from a physical node to a virtual node we get transfers rates of 35MB/s +. But if we perform the exact same copy from the same virtual node to the same physical node we only get rates of 5MB/s tops. (We are running on 1Gb interfaces). We have also performed tests with only 1 VM per host. (128GB RAM, 4 x Six Core Xeons. 8 NICs, 2 HBA – This is the host).

The virtual machine is a Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise. 2 GB Ram, 2 vCPU. Syntethic NIC. Integration Services up to date.

    Troubleshoot steps followed till now:

Upgrading R2 to R2 Sp1 (and its integration tools)

    Updating Firmware and Drivers.

Disable NIC Teaming and using 1 Interface alone.

Upgrade de VMbus buffers all the way to 4 Mb.

    Disable TCPoffloading

    Disable Chimney.

The physical host does not have this issue (the smb copy speed is good both ways) . However if you use a internal only network between 2 VMs the speed slowness is both ways indicating a problem with the Hyper-V virtual switch.

Any help on this topic would be highly appreciated.

    Hi,

According to the description, it seems that the "physical node" you mentioned is Hyper-V host machine and "a virtual node" is virtual machine running on the Hyper-V host machine. If there are any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

By the way, please help me to collect the following information:

    1. Have you tried to use legacy network adapter to see whether you get the same issue?

Note: The drivers of legacy network adapter is not available for 64bit of Windows Server 2003.

    2. Did you get this issue only with Windows Server 2003 VM or all the VMs?

    3. Have you tried to reboot the problematic VM to Safe Mode to see whether you get the same issue?

    4. Please elaborate your description "However if you use a internal only network between 2 VMs the speed slowness is both ways indicating a problem with the Hyper-V virtual switch."

In addition, please check the following KB.

A Windows Server 2003-based computer responds slowly to RDP connections or to SMB connections that are made from a Windows Vista-based computer

    Hi Vincent,

The SMB hotfix was already installed on the server let me try and answer your questions

    1. Have you tried to use legacy network adapter to see whether you get the same issue?

Cant use legacy as its windows 2003

Note: The drivers of legacy network adapter is not available for 64bit of Windows Server 2003.

    2. Did you get this issue only with Windows Server 2003 VM or all the VMs?

We have tried with Windows 2008 VM- VM copy still the same issue

    3. Have you tried to reboot the problematic VM to Safe Mode to see whether you get the same issue?

No we havent tried to reboot the VM in safe mode. I think we can boot in safe mode with networking n check the copy

    4. Please elaborate your description "However if you use a internal only network between 2 VMs the speed slowness is both ways indicating a problem with the Hyper-V virtual switch."

Slowness is when VM- VM copy and VM - Host. However, when copying from Host to VM we get good speed.

I also un-install the NIC teaming software from HP still no luck :(

All you help would be highly appreciated

    Hi,

Have you tried to boot the problematic VM into Safe  Mode with networking to see whether you get the same issue?

By the way, did you connect VM to an External Virtual Network or an Internal Virtual Network?

    Best Regards,
