Issue with 3x External virtual network adaptors
Issue with 3x External virtual network adaptors
- I have 2x External virtual network adaptors in a hyper-v server at present
1x on internal network 172.16.0.0/16
1x on NAT'ed ADSL connection seperate from network 192.168.15.0/24
I am trying to setup an additional (3rd) connection on a seperate adaptor for a static un-NAT'ed WAN address for use with ISA as a direct WAN connection, I am not assigning the adaptor an IP address as I will do this in the virtual machine I wish to use it with.
however; everytime I add this new adaptor i loose all connectivity to the host O/S via both other external connections, as soon as I delete the virtual adaptor again connectivity to the other 2 external connections returns.
the NIC in question is an Intel(r) Pro/1000 DT Server Dual adaptor NIC, however I have now replaced this with another Intel single NIC card which is still causing the same issues.
I dont have a tremendous amount of experience with Hyper-V, so apologies in advance if this is a bit of a noob question.

Is this a Hyper-V R2 server? If so there is a checkbox that you need to un check on the new external network interface. It’s the “Enable the management operating system to share this connection” checkbox. Since you have the first adapter for the management I would suggest un checking that box. This will dedicate the NIC to the VM you want to run ISA.

- Joseph,
no Sadly this is still a R1 Server 2008 x64. I dont recall seeing any settings anywhere in the setup for the reservation of a management interface or adaptor.

TS GURU Ok that option for the check box didn't come about until R2. There is still a way to do this but let me look back at an older R1 box.
Joseph Noga MCITP, MCSE, MCSA, MCTS CCNA,CCDA,CCVP Managing Consultant VSD Technologies- Thanks Joseph,
ive just as a technical exercise disconnected the "1x on NAT'ed ADSL connection seperate from network 192.168.15.0/24" and set the network adaptor as the new one I am trying to add (so 2 virtual adaptors in total)
same problem, locks up and I loose all connectivity from the 172.16.0.0 adaptor.
Its got to be some sort of configuration associated with the other adaptor.
connections 1& 2 in my original post are on the same Broadcom (Dual Port NIC) on board...
its the 3rd connection is a PCI-express card, Intel, ive tried 2 different cards to rule out compatibility and driver issues.

TS GURU How are you configuring the adapters on the host? Are you assigning IP's to them? Are you changing anything on the physical adapters?
Did you look in the event log of the server for any other information related to the problem?
Joseph Noga MCITP, MCSE, MCSA, MCTS CCNA,CCDA,CCVP Managing Consultant VSD Technologies- Hi, The physical adapters are configured as installed (default). The virtual adapters have IP addresses statically assigned. Nothing obvious in the event log - sadly I have to give up on this now and have to build this on an actual server. I am still interested if you have any thoughts as we might run in to this issue again in the future.
