Hyper-V and DirectX
Hi guys,

I was wondering: does the PARENT partition supports DirectX (3D/etc)?

Thanks.
© 2009 Microsoft Corporation. And you have to have DirectX installed. Server core doesn't support DirectX, of course.

I did some testing for you. The results were interesting. I initially connected to my Hyper-V server using Remote Desktop Connection. I ran all Passmark's PerformanceTest's 3D graphics tests. The simple test worked, but the medium and complex tests failed with this error message:

---------------------------
PassMark DirectX Testing Suite
---------------------------
Warning: Nothing will be rendered.
The reference rendering device was selected, but your
computer only has a reduced-functionality reference device
installed. Please ensure that the most recent device driver
for your graphics adapter is correctly installed.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

That didn't make sense to me because I knew the graphics card supported DirectX and that DirectX was installed. I logged on locally and reran all of the tests successfully. So, yes, a parent partition can support DirectX, but not through Remote Desktop Connection.

Fri, 23 May 2008 03:25:30 Z2008-05-23T14:29:00Zhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/37409ab0-330d-4a8e-998c-892b3c81abd3#0da79e28-10ab-401c-97a4-9c8b39560c1bhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/37409ab0-330d-4a8e-998c-892b3c81abd3#0da79e28-10ab-401c-97a4-9c8b39560c1bCarlos Sosa Alberthttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Profile/en-US/?user=Carlos%20Sosa%20AlbertHyper-V and DirectX
Thanks a lot Paul!

That's great, I will give it a try over the weekend then.
Fri, 23 May 2008 14:28:50 Z2008-05-23T14:28:50Z
