Proposed Issues connecting a virtual machine to the internet through hosts connection.

    Hi there.

    In my University networking lab we have a networking set up as follows;

    A Windows Server 2008 R2 host machine

    Another Windows Server 2008 R2 slave controller Virtual Machine.

    2 x Windows 7 client virtual machines.

    We are trying to connect from one of the Windows 7 clients to the internet, using the hosts LAN connection. We are using Hyper-V manager to virtualize the clients and all of our machines are connected to a work group.

    The two windows 7 clients are connected to the host currently via two virtual networks we created in Hyper-V, this allows us to connect to the workgroup. From the clients we can ping the host and it works, but when we try to ping the internet, e.g www.google.co.uk it doesn't. However, it does resolve the name of google, e.g it knows the IP address.

    We don't want to bridge the network, but instead want to route it through the virtual network to the host and then to the internet, but no luck so far.

    We have tried using Routing and Remote Access service, but no luck with that either.

    I don't know what other details to post here, but any help getting a connection would be really appreciated.

    Thanks

    First of all, did you use external network on Hyper-V virtual network? Posting the results of ipconfig /all on both host and VM may help.

    The virtual networks in Hyper-V are Internal. I don't have access to the lab until next Tuesday, so will post the ip config results then.

    Agree. If you use Internal connection, then you may have 3 ways to make the VM to access the Internet: 1. RRAS. 2. Bridge. 3. ICS. This search result may help:
