I have a VHD that was damaged it appeby a RAID failure.  The RAID didn't fail the disk but it logged a "A block on the physical disk has been punctured by the controller" and "There was an unrecoverable disk media error during the rebuild or recovery operation" error last night.  The VHD now is showing as blank internally.  If I boot the VM with a 2008 R2 ISO and use recovery tools it shows the main partition as blank.  Also if I attempt to mount VHD via disk manager it prompts me to format disk.  I am moving the VHD to another disk, but is there any chance of recovery or is the VHD too damaged?

    Hi,

Wow ! It is time for using backup software to restore the vhd. (sorry about that)

If you have DPM, pls use DPM to restore.

You can try third party tool such as MediaHeal. Pls go to http://www.fileshome.com/data_recovery_recovery_data_data_rescue_176131.html

Not sure how good the product but you can give it a try.

    Good luck!

Well the somewhat ironic and sad part of this is it was my DPM server boot drive.  I actually couldn't do anything with the file (copy / move) since the partition of RAID on parent server was damaged somehow (although chkdsk said it was clean?)  Oh well, guess I get to rebuild DPM.

    Hi,

Please check the following tool to see whether there is any hope to get the VHD file back.

    http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/vhdtool

By the way, if you have any backup of the VM, you can restore it.

    Best Regards,

    Hi Brian,

Try Install back DPM and restore the DPM database from another dpm or from tape.

    Hi friend,

Why don't you try a professional VHD recovery software. It may help you to recover VHD file data from damaged Virtual hard drive. I also had the same problem, then fortunately one of my good friends suggested me to use third party tool. It really worked well for restoring my VHD data without creating Virtual environment. You can get this excellent tool from here: http://vhd-recovery-software.en.softonic.com/

I hope it will help you more.

    Hello Mark Adom,

Excellent tool!! It did an excellent job. I retrieved all my video, database, audio files as well as my deleted VHD files with original format frequently than other more complex shareware products I tried. It proves the assured recovered results.

    Thanks Alot..
