AnswerHyper-V - Active Directory & Gaming support

in our current small office network we are running 5 main PC's   - the slowest box is running Win2008 64bit RC1 and mainly handles Active Directory DNS/WINS. File & print services and  syslog for our cisco router/firewall.  we also run  Hyper-V server (win2003 32bit guest OS  for some special  2 factor authentication software etoken SSL VPN with our Cisco ASA/PIX -as it doesn't work under longhorn directly)  we can get this to all run ok with 2gb Ram simply because although it's running multiple services, actual traffic is light.

The Fastest PC is 64bit Extreme Quad-core is running Vista 32bit.. and runs mostly for Gaming.  most of the time is idle CPU/Disk .when not being use ... but when it is .. we have intense graphics with DirectX10.. and don't want to compromise game performance.

My question is, we need to free up a box to run as a webserver inside the DMZ... (with nothing else on it) would it be better to install win2008 64bit on the fastest box and create a guest OS for 32bit Vista to run the games on, along with the other Guest OS for win2003... or would it be ok to simply install the Games directly on Win2008 server (does it support DirectX10) and we wouldn't see any performance problems..   my understanding is that guest OS video performance is lacking..

last question .. is it better in terms of performance to have a base 64bit Win2008 Hyper-V running 32bit Guest OS... or 32bit base with 32bit guest..   I couldn't imagine any benefit of running 32bit base, with a 64bit guest OS. (either on an actual 64bit processor or only a 32bit one)

    thanks Kevin

You won't be able to play DirectX games within Hyper-V Virtual Guests.

DirectX is not supported / enlightened.

Hyper-V is only available in x86-64bit versions of Windows Server 2008.

There is no way that I could recommend using a Hyper-V server as a gaming computer.

    Cheers,

It would definitely be really cool if a Hyper V guest operating system could run directx (or at least Aero), but aren't you supposed to be doing work instead of playing games?
