I deleted top snap(oldest) and the entire subtree beneath it--all snaps were deleted. Why is there no merging process?

Wednesday, February 06, 2013 12:55 AMWhen I deleted the top snap and the entire subtree of snaps beneath it there appeared to be no merging process. The reboot occurred almost immediately without the usual merging of the snaps. Am I missing something or did removing all the snaps allow for a restart without any merging of snaps--since all were deleted.

Hyper-V 2012 will merge while the VM continues to run (in the background) - any version of Hyper-V that is earlier will not.
Any earlier version requires the VM to be powered off.
To find the error go the Hyper-V specific event logs (Admin or Worker) under Applications and Service in the Event Viewer.

We have hyper-v 2008 R2 not hyper-v 12.

You powered off the VM(s) then?
They won't merge unless you do.

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 10:54 PMWhen I powered off the VM there was no merging process bar which I usually see. What is wrong? I should see a merging process bar in the hyper-v console for the virtual machine. And I deleted the entire snap subtree. And there is plenty of space. I turned it off and nothing happened so I powered it back on--what is going on and how do I fix this??

It can take as long as three minutes to begin / attempt to begin a merge.

So previous I have seen merges occur which show as a merging bar when the VM is powered down. So what I am wondering is that if this visible merging bar does not occur in hyper-v console does this mean there is still merging occuring?? I had assumed that this merging bar needed to show when merging was happening. In this case I deleted the entire subtree and stopped the VM. It sat for a minute and nothing happened so I powered it back on them restarted it just to be sure. Nothing happened so I assumed incorrectly that merging process was done or not needed. I was incorrect because there was AVHD files still existing on the drive. What do I need to do to clean up this mess.

Be patient when you power off the VM.
And please check the event logs for the possibility of errors.
The Hyper-V event logs - it will not be under Server or System or Application. It is under "Applications and Services" - Microsoft - Windows - Hyper-V (there are a few)

So what I am wondering is will there always be a merging bar to watch the merge to complete? Or do I have to watch the event viewer?
Eventvwr hyper-v just show information alerts stating merging starting and then being interupted when server was started up.

Okay. so according to the event viewer error the VM is being booted back up before the merging completes (or even really gets going).
Most likely not enough time is being given for the merging bar to begin ticking away (for the UI to refresh). Or it is way off to the right and not in the window view.
The event log was suggested simply to understand what was / was not happening - and now it is known.
Should the little bar show up? Yes. But not instantly.

So this merge will occur whether I shut it down, turn off, or save the VM?

The safest way is to shut down the vm (power it off cleanly on the OS of the VM).
as mentioned in the first reply.
Any of the 2008 versions will not merge until the vm is off, and only while the vm remains off)
