    Hi Tim,

This is what is missing on my Server.
I tried to manually install KB961371 but it fails. When I try to install SP2 it fails, asking me to install SP1 before.
SP1 is already installed, and another problem I have, is that I can't add or remove Roles or Features

    Tim, can you help me?

    Thanks 1000...

    Tim,
for me this is a miracle. It works!!!
Now I can manage Roles and Features, and I'm installing SP2.

    Thanks 1000.

Tim - Can you post the link for me. It says there are no files to download. I have a Server 2008 STD 64 bit that will not install SP2. It tells me to install SP1 first. When I view Update history I see all the updates that have been installed but I only see Microsoft Silverlight 3.0 when I go into View Installed Updates under Programs and Features

Having the same issue here as well. I can't install SP2 and other security updates are failing as well. I've tried the steps found in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-us to no avail.

I am also having the exact same issue on a Windows Server 2008 x64 w/SP1 running SCVMM.  I have the same error in my CheckSUR log.  Please advise.  Thank you.

I figured out a way around it...

Here is what you need to do, be sure to install SP2 immediately following this.

on the problematic server you will need to take ownership of the C:\Windows\servicing\packages folder. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE OWNERSHIP OF ANY HIGHER LEVEL FOLDERS, only the \Packages folder.

You need to copy the following files from an equivelant server version that IS NOT having this issue, meaning x32 or x64.
these files are located in your C:\Windows\servicing\Packages folder, copy them to the exact same location on the server having problems.

    x32 Example:
    Package_for_KB961371_server_0~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.4.cat
    Package_for_KB961371_server_0~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.4.mum
    Package_for_KB961371_server_1~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.4.cat
    Package_for_KB961371_server_1~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.4.mum
    Package_for_KB961371_server~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.4.cat
    Package_for_KB961371_server~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.4.mum
    Package_for_KB961371~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.4.cat
    Package_for_KB961371~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.4.mum

now that these exist on the problematic server re-ACL the \Packages folder from the parent and force permissions down on folders and files.

Reboot your problematic server, Then install SP2 IMMEDIATELY

Please let me know if this works for you

    Tim,

Can you release these files again. I am having the same problem on our WSUS server.

With so many people having this problem, when will this be available in the public domain without having to send a request?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Tim

Once again, I am having the same type of issue, I am unable to install updates to windows server 2008 sp1. Whether I try to install thru windows update or I manually download the SP2 update (KB948465) I end up with the same result, catastrophic failure 0x8000ffff.  The install did not complete.  KB958690 is my last actual windows update dated 3/11/09, the only other updates after that are for office or .net 1.1 with the most recent being 11/11/09.
