Problems Installing Windows Server 2008 64-bit Trial
- I have been attempting to install Windows Server Enterprise (Full Install from scratch) 2008 from a trial DVD received from Microsoft for a trial evaluation to a HP Proliant DL585G2 with the following Hardware configuration.
4 x Dual Core Opterons
32gb Ram
8x146gb SAS drives internal
12x146gb drives in an MSA70 Direct Attached Storage Enclosure
I had initially installed a version I downloaded online on another DL585 G2 box but had to trash the setup due to the tyranny of the urgent. This install goes thru the HP Smartstart setup, loads the OS, reboots, and hangs on the last step "Completing Installation ..."
Anybody have any ideas or simlar experience?- Edited byJose Christobal Tuesday, June 23, 2009 4:33 PM

Hi Jose,
Are you running HP ProLiant DL585 G2 Server or HP ProLiant DL585 G2 Storage Server?
If you are running HP ProLiant DL585 G2 Storage Server, I suggest contacting HP to confirm whether Windows Server 2008 is compatible with it as on the website, only Microsoft Windows Unified Data Storage Server 2003 x64 Edition is displayed in the supported system list.
If you are running HP ProLiant DL585 G2 Server, I suggest we wait 10 to 15 minutes on the current screen to make sure that the computer does not continue with the Setup procedure.
If so, please remove unnecessary hardware devices such as sound card, printer, TV card and network card from the system. Unplug and re-plug the USB mouse and keyboard. Then try to install the system again.
The hanging issue during a system installation can be sometimes caused by the corrupt installation disk or DVD drive. You can try to download the ISO file again and use another DVD drive to test the issue.
If this issue persists, please Shift + F10 to launch the command line window. Please copy the following installation log files to a USB flash drive and then send them to me for further analysis:
C:\windows\panther\setupact.log
C:\windows\panther\setuperr.log
C:\windows\panther\unattendgc\setupact.log
C:\windows\panther\unattendgc\setuperr.log
C:\windows\setupact.log
C:\windows\setuperr.log

Hope it helps.

- Tim,
I have confirmed by many attempts to install that it is the 64-bit driver set. I believe that on this particular box that the 32-bit version with 64gb of ram supporeted will suffice for our needs for the foreseeable future.
The install I used was a trial DVD I received from Microsoft last week which contained both 32-bit and 64-bit collateral. Since I am setting up a database box to run SQL Server 2008 I was attempting to use the 64-bit version, but it has not worked out, for reasons I cannot fathom. I was originally able to install on another box with a trial copy from the web I downloaded 2-3 months ago, but I do not know what is different, other than maybe the HP drivers are not ready for prime time. Hi Jose,
Thank you for the update. Have you tried the suggestions in my previous reply, especially removing all unnecessary devices? Have you tried another installation disk? Have you tried to install the 32-bit of Windows Server 2008 on the server? What is the result?
Based on my experience, many Windows installation issues are caused by hardware compatibility issues. I suggest that you contact HP first to confirm whether this model of computer is compatible with Windows Server 2008 64bit. If this problem continues, please help collect the installation log file listed in my previous reply as that I can perform further research.

Hi Jose,
How are things going? I have not heard back from you in a few days and wanted to check on the status of the issue. Please let me know how things turned out.

- Tim,
Sorry for the lack of a response on my part, I forgot I posted this ..... I am now trying to install the 2008r2 64bit version on top of the SmartStart 8.30 64bit driver set. It is doing the exact same thing. 32 bit is not supported under r2, so I am forced to do 64 bit (not necessarily bad unless it doesn't work). I solved my prior problem by reverting to 2008 32 bit sp2.
I have tried everything you suggested, nothing helps.
If you want I can upload the files you wanted ....
I am running just the regular server. The only difference is that I have a MSA70 direct attached raid array attached now. - I think I have finally solved the problem ..... and maybe its a DUH! moment. If you create the installation as raid-5, it creates the array and optimizes it. In this scenario, the optimization was in a wait state at the end of the install, before the first reboot where the registry is updated. The install was evidently waiting on the raid controller to finish optimizing before ity rebooted. The solution is to install as raid 0, then go back after installation and migrate to raid-5/6.
DUH! WHy didnt I think of this sooner?
PS: The install has not finished yet .... so I may be premature - This might be a dumb question, but what is the default password for Windows Storage Server 2008 Basic. It installs fine, however I can not log into it. MSDN does not provide anything other than the product key.
Regards,
WS
