Windows Server 2008 and the PXE boot Image
- Hello,
I am supposed to deploy the WDS on Windows Server 2008, please let know if someone can help me with the following stepts or atleast recommend me the useful readings/movies/examples etc.
1.How to create PXE boot Image
2. Once the PXE boot image is done, the next step is to customize the Master PC using SYSPREP, (operating system will be VISTA or Windows 7)i will use the RESEAL mode.
So if anybody can help me with the above two questions, i will be very thankful.
Recommendation: Please recomend from your experience that Imagex should be installed on the WDS to create/capture image.
Regards

Hi,
I suggest referring to one of the two articles below to add the driver to your boot.wim file:
http://www.vanerkel.net/catalog/index.php?mode=detail&node=259
http://blog.hongens.nl/2008/02/18/adding-drivers-to-wds-boot-images/
Note 1: I recommend using the boot.wim file from a Windows Server 2008 32bit or Windows 7 32bit disk.
Note 2: If you would like to deploy Windows Vista, add the Windows Vista driver for your network card to boot.wim . If you would like to deploy Windows 7, add the Windows 7 driver for your network card to boot.wim.
Hope it helps.

If your are adding lite touch to your WDS server, after you connect to your deployment share, the imagex utility is in the tools folder, if that helps for information.
- Hi
Thxs for reply, i have read that artical.
I am struckk with the "Create PXE boot Image" task, how i can do this ? Assuming the WDS server is ready.
I am using Windows Server 2008
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766320(WS.10).aspx is for the 2003 Server. - So according to your recommendation , the WDS server is the correct place to install the ImageX.?
I am struck with the "Create PXE boot Image" task, how i can do this ?
Add the appropriate network card driver to a boot image and then add this boot image into the WDS server.
Although http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766320(WS.10).aspx is written for Windows Server 2003, the key steps are the same.

Sure...
1. I am supposed to create the PXE boot image, i m using windows server 2008 and WDS on the same machine. So need help to how u can crate PXE boot image.
2. Also, i m confused with boot.wim image.......... i am supposed to use the vista as client, then i must select boot.wim image from vista DVD or from the Server 2008 DVDHi,
You do not need to create a PXE boot image. You can use the boot.wim file in a Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 or Windows 7 disk as a PXE boot image directly. I recommend using the boot.wim file from a Windows 7 32bit disk as it will support both 32bit and 64bit install images.
You may need to add network drivers to the PXE boot image. To do so, please refer to the following articles:
If you are running on a Windows Server 2008 system to add network drivers to the PXE boot image:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749350(WS.10).aspx
If you are running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 system to add network drivers to the PXE boot image:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd799289(WS.10).aspx
Hope it helps.

- Thank you for your concern i will go through the links you recommended.
- Hi
I have read the articale for the server 2008, still confused to how to add the networtk driver to boot image. The articale shows the adding driver to offline images but it is not so much helping for me.
Also let me know if i should add the driver of the Server machine (running server 2008) or the client machine (running Vista).
If you can explain i will be verythnakful you.
NOTE: the linkhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749350(WS.10).aspx shows like the following :
"Apply the base image (Winpe.wim) by using ImageX to a local Windows PE directory".... but here as per your recommendition i am supposed to add driver to the "boot.wim" , the articale is showing "winpe.wim". So i am also confused with this. Hi,
I suggest referring to one of the two articles below to add the driver to your boot.wim file:
