    Hi,

Is it possible to install Windows 2008 onto an HP DL380 G3? I know it is not on the official supported hardware list by HP, but this is the only spare bit of kit we have to try it out. Previous releases have run ok on unsupported kit.

When I boot from the setup DVD, it runs through "loading files", then "Microsoft Corporation" appears with the moving bar and then the vista wallpaper appears along with the mouse icon and thats it! It just sits there, the mouse is still functional though nothing else happens and the keyboard doesn't do anything.

Any ideas? I'd love to play with W2KS8 but if it doesn't run on this then I'm a little more than stuck!

    Cheers
    Tim

    Hello,

Based on my experience, this is usually related to the incompatible hardware. If this machine is not listed on the official supported hardware by HP, I am sorry to say that it may be incompatible with Windows Server 2008. We cannot guarantee that it will work. You may also contact HP to see whether they have any workaround on this.

Please note that incompatible hardware may cause some unpredictable problems even that you can install the operating system.

I wouldn't like to suggest trying to add any drivers into the boot image as it is really hard to tell which part of hardware doesn't support Windows Server 2008.

    Best regards,

    Chang Yin

When sitting at that screen, can you hit shift-F10 and get a DOS box?

OK, I've got in installing via a VM in VI3.5, so at least I know the DVD works!

Though I don't really want to be running it this way long term, has anyone got any other thoughts or ideas?

I'm guessing now it is some sort of driver issue when the Windows PE tries to access my array controller or something, though there doesn't seem a way to access or change this?

I had no problems putting it on a G3. I had to use an external USB DVD drive, but it went pretty smoothly for me. I was even albe to load the HP tools after the install was done.

That's promising - what model array controller are you running? Also why did you have to you an external USB drive or is that becuase your server doesn't have an onbaord DVD?

    Thanks, Tim

    Hi,

I have the same issue, when installing server 2008 ... installation hangs on "completing installation".
Did you manage to install it on the DL 380 G3?
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
