Hi All, I am setting up a brand new HP ML110 with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition. It is the only server and i will use it for AD services and file and print for now, maybe database in future, all email and calendering is done through google apps. The Spec. is: ML110 G5 Xeon 3065 (2330/1333-4MB) Dual Core 2 x HD Caviar/1TB SATA 3Gb/s 7200rpm 32MB Onboard SATA RAID controller 4 x HP 1GB (1x1GB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered ECC DIMM Memory - Total Memory = 4GB Approx 50 users - 18 interactive whiteboard laptops, 3 admin staff, 29 assorted classroom pcs intermittently used. Immediate use of server is for file and print. We use Google Apps for all email and calendar. I purchased enterprise edition with a view to setting up a second virtual server for office use, to keep sensitive data away from the main server. I realise this can be done using windows security and would welcome views on whether i should bother with the virtual server. Long term we may use the have a database server on this machine but nothing at present. I have set up the machine as follows: both 1TB disks are mirrored in hardware raid to give one 1TB drive system partition (c:)is 100GB (should i bother partitioning or just use the whole disk?) Share for user files setup on d: drive for all users except office users and their roaming profiles I setup a second server in Hyper -V with 60GB disk size and put a seperate share in there for office users documents and roaming profiles. My idea was to limit access to the virtual server using the firewall and base it on ip addresses - is that sensible ? Last question - Would you recommend redirecting documents folders or telling users to save directly into the shared drive. I have tested redirecting and it takes a long time as the folders are quite big. Many thanks, John

    Hi,

what would you do about the system partition, would you use the whole disk as a c: drive?

    >> It depends, usually we assign enough space for system partition and then give the rest for other partition to make use of the disk space.

By the way, you mentioned that “both 1TB disks are mirrored in hardware raid to give one 1TB drive system partition (c:)is 100GB”, I wonder that you should have 1 TB space, but one it’s 100GB at last, is this a mis-sensed input?

Also, would you rely on windows security for the sensitive data or would you use a separate virtual server firewalled off?

    >> It depends also, you can set permission for different users or group.

That server sounds like a huge single point of failure to me. On a glorified desktop "server" like that, I would roll out at least 2 of them, and if you are going to use hyper-v, I would add more disk and memory for sure.

    Hi Jonathon,
thanks for your prompt reply. I am aware of the single point of failure but Single servers are quite common in schools due to costs. Also they are not as mission critical as businesses. I will be backing up and will have time to restore should it be necessary. I'm afraid that this is the equipment i have and i must make do with it.
