Unable to install WSUS 3,0SP1 nor WSUS 3,0SP2 - Error 0x80070643

Friday, September 04, 2009 1:02 PMHi everyone,
I've been using WSUS 3.0SP1 with Windows Internal Database on our Windows 2003 R2 SP2 Server for many months without problem. Yesterday we installed latest MS patches from Windows Update including Windows Internal Database SP3 (KB955706) and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706), which failed to install. Ever since then our WSUS server is dead.
I've tried repairing WSUS 3.0SP1 using reinstall on the original database, but I've only got a message, that the database is incompatible
Then I've tried installing Report Viewer 2008 and upgrading to WSUS 3.0SP2, but it died during setup leaving these messages in Event Log:

Then I've tried removing everything manually and starting from the scratch with WSUS 3.0 SP1 and let it install new Windows Internal Database and build a new instance for WSUS, but it failed again:

rebuilding indexes using Lodctr /R
Enabling TCP/IP and Named pipes on the SSEE database
changing SSEE database to run under LOCAL SYSTEM account
... but no success at all
Right now I'm quite desperate, so if someone can help I would really appreciate it.- Edited by azarro Monday, September 07, 2009 1:13 PM confusing Title

Background questions:
Why is SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on this server?
Why did you install these updates from Windows Update (sic) (*Microsoft Update*) if you have a perfectly functioning WSUS Server?
Did you install these updates concurrently, or in separate installation sessions? If separately, which one did you install first?
Did you restart the server after these initial installations, or after any of the subsequent uninstallations and reinstallations?

Looks here like the Windows Internal Database Service Pack 3 package did *not* install successfully.

Once you corrupted the Windows Installer Database installation, unless you explicitly *uninstalled* the Windows Internal Database *service* (see Appendix A of the WSUS3SP1 Operations Guide), you've not likely remediated anything, and subsequent installation attempts would likely fail, as this one did.

Hello,
First of all, thanks for answering my post.
Now,
1) Why is SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installed on this server?
- SQL Express is installed because of HP monitoring utilities for EVA, which are present on the server as well
2) Why did you install these updates from Windows Update (sic) (*Microsoft Update*) if you have a perfectly functioning WSUS Server?
- My colleague has installed them manually, because he had been probably unaware of WSUS self update feature :-/
3) Did you install these updates concurrently, or in separate installation sessions? If separately, which one did you install first?
- He said he had installed it using Microsoft Update web page, which installed them in one session and then restarted
- the first patch was Windows Internal Database Service Pack 3 (KB955706) and according to log it has installed succesfully
4) Did you restart the server after these initial installations, or after any of the subsequent uninstallations and reinstallations?
- If you mean after installing the patches, yes the server has been restarted.
5) Once you corrupted the Windows Installer Database installation, unless you explicitly *uninstalled* the Windows Internal Database *service* (see Appendix A of the WSUS3SP1 Operations Guide), you've not likely remediated anything, and subsequent installation attempts would likely fail, as this one did.
I have removed it using Windows Installer Cleanup tool, but I´ll give it a shot.
Thanks,

Ok,
So I've tried to uninstall the Windows Internal Databse according to WSUS3SP1 Operations Guide, reapply Windows Internal Database Service Pack 3 package and launched a new clean installation of WSUS3.0SP1, but the outcome is the same..

3) Did you install these updates concurrently, or in separate installation sessions? If separately, which one did you install first?
This is the most likely contributing factor to your situation.
- He said he had installed it using Microsoft Update web page, which installed them in one session and then restarted
- the first patch was Windows Internal Database Service Pack 3 (KB955706) and according to log it has installed succesfully
Service Packs are generally exclusive updates. Even when not configured as an Exclusive Update, they should be treated as such. Attempting to install two separate instances of Service Pack 3 for a SQL Server installation (Express, WID), is an invitation for trouble.
I would suggest attempting to reinstall the Windows Internal Database Service Pack 3 using the following procedure, once you get to the point that it's a relevant action:
1. Reboot the server.
2. Ensure that all services are functioning that should be.
3. Ensure that all remote sessions are disconnected.
4. From the server *console*, initiate the installation of the Windows Internal Database Service Pack 3.
5. Observe the behavior of the installer and report the results.

So I've tried to uninstall the Windows Internal Databse according to WSUS3SP1 Operations Guide, reapply Windows Internal Database Service Pack 3 package
Please clarify... you:
1. Uninstalled the Windows Internal Database, and THEN
2. Attempted to install a Service Pack to a non-existant installation???

Okay... let's try one more time.
1. Use this WSUS Product Team blog post to ensure you have uninstalled every trace of WSUS, including the WID.
http://blogs.technet.com/sus/archive/2008/11/05/how-to-manually-remove-all-of-wsus.aspx
2. Reboot the server.
3. Reinstall WSUS.
4. Confirm that all WSUS functionality is working as expected.
5. Make a complete backup of WSUS, as described in the WSUS Operations Guide.
6. Attempt to install Windows Internal Database Service Pack 3 using the instruction I described in the previous post.

Hello,
I've tried all the steps to remove WSUS and WID as described on the WSUS team blog, rebooted the server and run an installation of WSUS 3.0SP1, but the outcome is still the same - installation hangs on the Configuring the database part of the WSUS 3.0SP1 setup and fails with this error - http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/5278/wsus30sp2.jpg
Eventlog and WSUS log files contain the same data as I've already posted earlier.
It is becoming to look like I'm gonna have to move WSUS to some other server..
Thanks,

At last i managed to uninstall after using the Windows installer cleanerup utility http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Windows-Installer-CleanUp-Utility-Download-18442.html and follow the process described in this link http://blogs.technet.com/b/sus/archive/2008/11/05/how-to-manually-remove-all-of-wsus.aspx?PageIndex=2&CommentPosted=true#commentmessage
then i had to install it back. but as soon as i fnished installation i was welcomed with this error message "An error occured when communicting with the server, and this wizard must be closed. You may restart the WSUS server configuration wizard from the options page in the WSUS 3.0 console".
after that i started WSUS i was not able to go to the option page as no page was displayed istead the is the connection Error.
