Hi, we are currently running Update Services v3.2.7600.226 on Server 2003 R2 Standard.  Is there a more recent version of WSUS that we should be running?

    Thanks

The WSUS you are running is actual:

What do you mean by 'actual' - is it the latest (226)?

Yes, you need to apply KB2720211, which will upgrade your WSUS server to v3.2.7600.251 - which is the latest version.

I have installed updates for our WSUS server which included KB2720211, and confirmed in IE update history that this update was successful.  However when I open the WSUS console and click Help > About Update Services it still reports 3.2.7600.226.

Is there an additional step I need in order to get up to .251?

Help > About Update Services it still reports 3.2.7600.226.

The 'About Update Services' dialog is not updated by this patch. Look on the Update Services node of the console, in the Connections section of the main display. The current version of WSUS is displayed.

When I highlight the Update Services node at the top of the left pane, I do not see a Connections section in the middle pane nor do I see anything denoting a version number.

Referencing the following article - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939828(v=ws.10).aspx - looking at the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup

    VersionString = 3.2.7600.226

In the *CONSOLE* -- not in the registry!

As I previously said -- the "About Update Services" dialog is not updated. Neither, apparently, is this registry value. No great surprise, really, this update is an MSP patch update, which typically do not update such things -- particularly when they're rushed out the door in a hurry.

However, the *CONSOLE* is updated. So please look in the console as I suggested.

Thanks, but I understand what the WSUS console is.  Please re-read my previous post - I clearly mention not being able to see any "Connections" section in the console as per your post.  I only looked into the registry *after* not seeing what you were referring to.

So instead of repeating your advice about the "About Update Services" not being updated (which I understood the first time) maybe we can try to figure out why I'm not see this "Connections" section of the console that you referred to?

I clearly mention not being able to see any "Connections" section in the console as per your post.

If you don't have any nodes under the Update Services node, or you don't have a status display on the Update Services node, then either the console (if a remote console) is fatally broken, or if on the WSUS server itself - you may have a broken WSUS installation. (Possibly as a result of a defective installation of KB2720211.)

Incidentally is this on a Windows Server 2003 system with a separate MMC-based WSUS console... or is this a Win2008(R2) system, where the WSUS console is integrated into Server Manager?

I do have all of the nodes under Update Services: Updates, Computers, Downstream Servers, etc.  I also do have a status display on the Update Services node displaying our WSUS server's Computer and Update status.  What I do *not* see is a version number anywhere in the main display which you mentioned a few posts back.

    We're running Windows Server 2003 R2.

I also do have a status display on the Update Services node displaying our WSUS server's Computer and Update status.

    Excellent.

    • What is to the right of the "Computer Status" pie chart in the "Overview" section?
    • What is to the right of the "Update Status" pie chart in the "Overview" section?
    • What is underneath the "Update Status" pie chart in the "Overview" section?
    • What is to the right of whatever is underneath the "Update Status" pie chart in the "Overview" section?

    • What is to the right of the "Computer Status" pie chart in the "Overview" section? - to the right is the Computers with errors, needing updates, and installed/na stats.
    • What is to the right of the "Update Status" pie chart in the "Overview" section? - same stats here: errors, Updates needed, installed/na.
    • What is underneath the "Update Status" pie chart in the "Overview" section? - there is just white space underneath the Update Status and Computer Status sections, nothing is there.
    • What is to the right of whatever is underneath the "Update Status" pie chart in the "Overview" section? - in the right (Actions) pane there is Connect to Server, View, New Window, Refresh, Help, then just white space under those options.

Okay... let me try a shot in the dark.  Is your console running in a web browser?

Not a browser, we run our WSUS server in a VM and access it via the VMWare Infrastructure Client.

Okay, I know what's happening. My misunderstanding.

Under your Update Services node, in the standalone console (but not in the Server Manager console - which I was allowing to cloud my judgment), there is a node for yur WSUS server. Please select that node, and there you will find in the bottom right corner of the Overview section, the version of your WSUS server.
