Server 2008 SP1 not able to receive updates

<p>I have several 2008 servers that are no longer receiving updates from our WSUS server. These servers were able to receive updates previously. We have not made any changes to our environment. The problem servers are on a different domain than the WSUS server. The problem servers are part of a group, the other servers (in the same domain and on the same network as the problem servers) have no problems receiving updates. The last updates applied were on the 20/12/2012;

I have verified that the registry settings on the problem machines are the same as the workers.

When I browse to the WSUS server; http://192.168.X.XX/selfupdate/wuident.cab I am able to open the cab file which would indicate that the connectivity is ok(?).

WSUS server has Update KB2720211 applied.

The server response could not be parsed.

Since you have "several Windows 2008 servers" exhibiting this problem, I think we can rule out the client-side and you should focus on the server side. What has changed on the WSUS server since December 20th?

We have two points that we can target our attention toward:

1. The machines are all from a different domain. Generally speaking, WSUS is domain agnostic; however, if a WSUS server were misconfigured with regard to anonymous access, it's possible that it would continue to authenticate domain-member systems, but refuse non-domain member systems. However, that behavior results in an HTTP 401 error, generally speaking. Nonetheless, it is possible that some other domain-specific scenario is a contributing factor.

2. The machines are all in the same WSUS Target Group. It's possible this Target Group has become corrupted, or dysfunctional, in the WSUS database. Create a *NEW* WSUS Target Group and MOVE these systems into that new Target Group. Retry the detection with wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow. If the issue resolves, then add the approvals for the new group that existed on the old group and delete the old group. If the issue does not resolve, then continue diagnostics with the machines still in the new group, but eventually (when the issue is resolved) they will need to be moved back to the original group.

Also, there is a third point to consider: Is there a proxy server, or any other network appliance (firewall, webfilter, etc.) that sits between the domain of these dysfunctional machines, and the WSUS server?
