AnswerWSUS database files missing

Windows 2008 SP2.   Have an issue where the SUSDB.mdf and SUSDB_LOG.ldf became corrupt and now can NOT be found by WSUS 3.0 SP2.   Keep getting "Error: Connection Error" and to Reset Server Node or Copy Error to Clipboard.   When searching for the previous listed files on the machine, they do NOT exist.   The event log has an error id of 12707, 12704 and 18456.   So i tried to uninstall WSUS but get an 80070643 - attempt to un-install windows server update services failed.    Tried to re-install WSUS, but the system wants to un-install first.   How can i fix or recreate SUSDB.mdf and SUSDB_LOG.ldf, or remove WSUS and start over?   Any way to fix this problem?

    Thanks in advance

Well shucks.... although I must say: No real surprise.

It's been my observation that 90% of upgrade failures are directly, or indirectly, tied to some sort of security reconfiguration.

Sometimes it's just a matter of finding what was (usually, unknowingly) changed.

In many cases, it's a result of unexpected side-effects of the Win2003 Security Configuration Wizard. :-/

Have removed per instructions.   WSUS is still checked in the Server Manager under Roles.   Tried to re-install and get message of Fail to connect to SQL server  MAIN\MICROSOFT##SSEE  The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Thought when in re-installed WSUS 3.0 SP2 this was created automatically.    How do i get this service installed so i can get WSUS working again?

    Here's install log -

My apologies. I did not read closely enough. The procedure provided is for uninstalling WSUS as an application on a Windows Server 2003 system. For uninstalling WSUS as a Role, you'll need to follow the Window Server 2008 procedures for uninstalling a ROLE. If it won't uninstall, you should ask for general guidance in the Windows Server 2008 forums for uninstalling a ROLE that will not uninstall.

Have asked for help in the general guidanace for windows server 2008 forums.   So far the reply has been, i would get better help from the WSUS forums.   All i would like is to get this running again.    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I Had a similar issue three days ago, and i've followed the instructions (How to manually remove WSUS) and still my WSUS server is not functioning, i just knew now from this topic after i've followed the instructions that it's not applied to Windows Server 2008, it should be clear in the above instructions that it's only for Windows server 2003. Now the WSUS role is not working, i can't even remove or reinstall it, please advice.

    Thanks and good luck

Is there any way of fixing this?   The general forum doesn't seem to want to reply to me.

Bummer! I feel your pain. Complicating matters is the lack of guidance from the WSUS team on how to "uninstall WSUS as a role" when it doesn't work as advertised. I'd hoped maybe the Win2008 guys had some generic guidance on the simple question of "how to uninstall a hosed role (regardless of the role)". I'd venture to guess this is covered somewhere in the Win2008 Resource Kit, the Technet product documentation, or the Administrator's Companion -- all of which I have access to, but have not had the time to review.

One other possible answer, albeit not always a functional answer, is "Roll back to the System Restore Point captured at the time of original installation."

it should be clear in the above instructions that it's only for Windows server 2003
Not wanting to minimize your actual challenge, or my concern for the issue, in general, I will point out that the date of the blog post (which significantly predates the release of Windows Server 2008 or the WSUS-as-a-Role capability) should be the first clue that it's Not Applicable to WSUS-on-Win2008. :)

While the Resource Kit and Administrator Companion are retail products, the Technet Library is publicly available online.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd349801(WS.10).aspx

The other two are available from standard retail sources, notably amazon.com and bn.com, and really should be standard fare in every organization's IT Dept library.

In addition, they're also available with a SafariBooksOnline subscription, which can be had for as little as $10/month (for a five-slot bookshelf).
