Updates only install when given a deadline

I'm running System Center Essentials with the WSUS snap-in, and am having an issue wherein updates will only download and install on the clients when I issue a deadline. If I dont set a deadline the updates dont install. Furthermore, SCE doesnt even acknowledge that updates are needed.

However, if I set a deadline the updates are deployed and installed and SCE then does acknowledge update status.

All group policy settings appear to be correct, and computers are checking in to SCE. Computers are definately on during the scheduled installation time, and are set to check in every 6 hours and install every day.

Has anyone seen this behavior before and found a solution?

This sounds like your policy is misconfigured. The fact that you can install updates with deadlines tells us that everything is working except installation of updates via a scheduled event. So, either the policy is misconfigured, and there is no scheduled event, or the policy is not being applied correctly.

Hi rgb42,

Could you please post the configuration of the Windows Update setting in SCE Managed Computers group policy?

If your setting is correct, please run "gpudpate /force" on the client, wait for a while, run "rsop.msc" to make sure the policy has been successfully applied on the client.

Also, in ADUC, make sure all clients are in the "SCE Managed Computers" group.

Thanks for jumping in here guys.

I checked rsop on a few clients and they are correctly recieving the wsus gp settings. Also, all clients are in the SCE Managed Computers group.

Below are the GP Settings in the policy. I changed the wsus computer name for privacy.

Okay, next thing to look at. From one of the clients where you had to impose a deadline to force the installation...

Please post these three log segments:

The log segment from the actual installation that occurred as a result of the deadline.

The log segment for 3am local time the morning of that actual installation.

The log segment for the detection/download events prior to 3am that morning where the update was detected/downloaded and ready for installation at 3am.

Ok, the logs show that prior to the deadlined installs windows update client detected 0 updates. The updates had been approved for the All Clients Group days before wherein all clients reside.

I have the logs below for you to peruse.

I would suggest that no updates were detected because this client does not appear to be detecting against the "All Clients" target group.

Have you configured the WSUS Server to use Server-Side targeting, or Client-Side (Policy-Based) targeting?

Of course, that still leaves us with the unanswered question concerning why the addition of the deadline changed the detection behavior of the "All Clients" group.

Thanks for helping out with this. I did not have targeting configured. I just now configured Client Side Targeting to target the All Clients group, then ran a gpupdate /force, rebooted a test machine, and ran wuauclt.exe /detectnow. I'll see if that does anything.

Also, it appears that clients were/are checking the Unassigned Computers Group which would explain why they're not getting updates. I dont have an Unassigned Computers group in SCE, but it does exist in the separate WSUS console. I was under the impression that you should only need to bother with SCE. Perhaps this isnt so, or the new client side targetting policy will correct this. Here's a log snippet indicating this.

Yes, it does, which was pretty much my point with my earlier comment "I would suggest that no updates were detected because this client does not appear to be detecting against the "All Clients" target group.", and evidenced by the lack of a target group identifier in the "Initializing simple targeting cookie" log entry.

I'm still having issues here. I think the problem lies more with the SCE/WSUS Server than with the clients. Although I have approved a number of updates to the All Clients group, the SCE Computers Console is reporting that all clients are up to date even though they are not. All computers report a Health State of OK.
Also, the Updates Console Overview Status Summary reports that 44 updates are needed by computers.

The updates I approved are not registering correctly in SCE, so when clients check in, SCE does not offer the updates to them.

Interestingly, last night I checked the status of computers in the All Clients group in the Computers Console and all computers correctly reported that updates were needed. However, upon refreshing the view, SCE again (incorrectly) reported that all clients were up to date. Checking the update status of individual computers verified that they did not have the updates installed.

Has anyone seen this behavior before?

Clients are now checking the correct target group.
