Problem with office 2003 update and WSUS 3.0 SP2
Good Morning,
I manage an important number of workstations (XP Sp3 Clients) which do not apply the Office 2003 Sp3 updates driven by WSUS.
The yellow shield is correctly displayed, but the updates fail systematically when applied. If I add the user into the local administrators group, the updates apply properly. If I set down the user as power or single one, as it is by default, the updates fail again...
I guess it could be a directory authorisation issue, or a register key problem. I set Full control on both the network directory including the Office 2003 set up files, and workstation local directories. Get nothing more.

But in my case the install point is not local but on the network.
This is a fundamental issue for installing Office updates with the WUAgent as the WUAgent runs in the context of the SYSTEM account and generally does not have network access. Even if the network resource is shared/readable by Everyone, it may still be a problem if the registry pointer to the network share is based on a mapped drive (which would be available to a *logged on* user, but not to the SYSTEM account).
The fix here would be to edit the registry (on each computer -- or set up a policy to configure the registry value) to point to the installation source using a UNC pathname, and verify that the share is Readable by Authenticated Users (if the client is a domain member) or Everyone (if not a domain member).

I manage an important number of workstations (XP Sp3 Clients) which do not apply the Office 2003 Sp3 updates driven by WSUS.
The yellow shield is correctly displayed, but the updates fail systematically when applied. If I add the user into the local administrators group, the updates apply properly. If I set down the user as power or single one, as it is by default, the updates fail again...
A relevant question here is exactly how you're attempting to install the service pack, and does the logged on user have *ALL* Office 2003 applications closed when attempting to do so.
The update should be installed in the context of the SYSTEM account, if it's being installed using the Windows Update Agent. If you're bypassing the WUAgent somehow, and installing the update directly, then this is definitely possible, as installing an Office 2003 SP2 surely does require administrative permissions.

The update has a *scheduled* installation time. You should use *scheduled* installations, particularly for service packs and other significant updates that may be sensitive to activity of a logged-on user.

First , sorry for my english but my collegue who's speak and write english better than me is absent for the rest of the week.
Effectively I had tried to install the update manually for accelarate the processus and have a event in the WindowsUpdate.log file. The problem is the same when I leave the process to install an update in schedule installation time. And unfortunetly, this problem concern all update, not only for a support pack for Office 2003.
The strange think is that work correctly for 150 computers with a schedule installation time, and all users are connected with single user right, exactly in the same condition for a computer for wich update doesn't apply. The office installation is the same, the source of the installation is the same, the pc are the same. I'm the only personn who deploy the computer in the company.
I copy the WindowsUpdate.log file with and schedule installation time.

Looks like the Office 2003 Local Installation Source has been deleted, or is corrupted.
Obtain the Office 2003 Local Installation Source Tool, read the instructions, and rebuild the Office 2003 Local Installation Source. (This is the hidden MSOCache folder that is created at installation time.)

I downloaded the listool.exe file but it works only for a local installation point. I have recreated a basic install point with the original office cdrom without modification, desintalling the old office 2003, reinstalling it and i have the error code. All update for office 2003 are in failed statut.

This is a fundamental issue for installing Office updates with the WUAgent as the WUAgent runs in the context of the SYSTEM account and generally does not have network access. Even if the network resource is shared/readable by Everyone, it may still be a problem if the registry pointer to the network share is based on a mapped drive (which would be available to a *logged on* user, but not to the SYSTEM account).
The fix here would be to edit the registry (on each computer -- or set up a policy to configure the registry value) to point to the installation source using a UNC pathname, and verify that the share is Readable by Authenticated Users (if the client is a domain member) or Everyone (if not a domain member).
