    Hi All,
Please, I see on the WSUS console that a machine needs x updates. In windowsupdate.log it is loged that 0 updates found. I cannot understand how it should go together.
In the meantime, I am still noting something strange in windowsupdate.log file:

    2009-10-23 15:12:37:167  152 1778 Agent   * Online = No; Ignore download priority = No

This seems to mstrange as other machines logs Online=Yes.

My question is what difference betwwen both logs and their impact?

    Thank you a lot.

     Answer
Please keep in mind that in one part client targeting is enabled. at WSUS part computers assigning is manual.
This will certainly cause problems. If client-side targeting is enabled, the client will execute the detections against the target group specified in policy, and report status back as a member of that group. This would certainly account for disparities between what is recorded in the log (based on the policy assigned group), and what may be displayed on the console (possibly old information, if it's associated with a group the client is no longer aware of).
    2009-11-05 07:27:58:471  152 864 PT Initializing simple targeting cookie, clientId = ecaa6bb8-1026-4423-b807-0993160dc399,
target group = Patching Desktop Prod, DNS name = yom1898.afdb.local
As regards the machine 'yom1898', is that machine listed on the WSUS server as being a member of the "Patching Desktop Prod" group, and only that group?

    This is a copy/paste of a windowsupdate.log
There are no errors in this log. This WUAgent is successfully detecting against the "Patching Desktop Prod" target group and finding =zero= updates approved for installation that are needed. The WUAgent has successfully reported this status to the WSUS server.

This is a notebook computer. Neither the 11/4 detection nor the 11/5 7:26am detection show an actual scan occuring, or a selfupdate check. The 11/5 7:27 detection shows an actual scan. The most likely cause is reflected in the value of "Online = No" or "Online = Yes". The WUAgent is capable of detecting whether there is an active network connection, and I'd venture an educated guess that this machine was connected to or logged onto the network at 7:26:52, as indicated by this log entry:

2009-11-05 07:26:52:938  152 580 AU AU received policy change subscription event
resulting in the "Online = Yes" value and subsequent detection which occurred at 7:27am.

The 7:27am scan ended at 7:29 and reportee =zero= approved updates found that were applicable for installation to this machine.

in my console I see 18 updates needed
Updates reported as Needed merely indicate that the updates *could* be installed, if they were Approved *and* the requisite content has been successfully downloaded to the WSUS Server. If the WSUS Server has pending downloads, which include these updates, then the WUAgent will behave exactly as this one has done.

    Hi Lawrence,
I had similar cases when needed updates as seen in the console are not loged at windowsupdate.log file. for those machines I did delete them and ran wuauclt /detectnow each one. That should "reset" record on the database and status in both sides became the same.
Also, on some machines, restaring should make that entry Online=Yes rather than No.
I don't think that network availability makes that entry at Yes or at No, as I am watching the log file remotely the time when it recorded No.

Please keep in mind that in one part client targeting is enabled. at WSUS part computers assigning is manual. I have 1700 machines.
Update is working on 1450 machines, remaining machines work with installation errors or WU entries that I am looking for their meaning.

Let's ask a question near those circonstances. I did stop/restart WU service at some machines just to take in effect some changes I am doing on their AU register keys. At that moment I observed the Online=No entry being recorded. I guess at machine (and service) startup that entry should be ONLINE=YES.

Could you guide us by the way.

    Thank you

    Cherif
