On a Win 7 client, updates appear, when choose to install them, I get "80244019 Windows Update encountered an unknown error."

On an XP client, updates appear, when choose to install them, the window disappears and the icon on the tray disappears, and the updates never install.

We're using client-side targeting with GPO's.   This server was migrated from an original WSUS server. (which we hope to de-commission after this one is proved working)  I copied the drive with the content (updates) manually with Win Explorer.   We are a small company so there were no real user groups to migrate.

I posted a couple other times on this forum with some other issues/qstns I ran into, if those might be relevant/helpful....see these links:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverwsus/thread/a0f87786-20de-4b1b-9dbd-fde8b6ad170e

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverwsus/thread/d64cd598-2668-43b0-af9f-ccd27cc20d6d

Logs are pretty cluttered, so hard to read but here's one from my Win7 client.... (just the time period of the last attempt to update)  :

OK.....I think I figured out the problem.  When I installed it I had given it a content path of E:\WSUS.     E: drive already had the \UpdateServicesPackages and \WsusContent folders (under a root folder of E:\WSUS_Content)  that we had copied over from the original server we migrated from.    These two same folder names exist under E:\WSUS but are empty!    So.....I plan to MOVE (not copy) all the 52GB worth of updates from the \WsusContent folder to the other one of the same name that's empty.    Funny thing is Synchronizations in the WSUS console  show as having been run successfully daily for weeks.  So I wonder what in the heck it was synching from (and to)?

Let me know if any of you WSUS gurus thinks I'm on the right track or not.   Thanks.

This is all a manifestation of (improperly) "migrating" your WSUS server. So you copied the old content to the same folder tree, and then installed WSUS, but did not properly set the parameters during installation to match what you already had. So the actual content is in E:\WSUS_Content\WSUSContent and the server is looking in E:\WSUS\WSUSContent, and it's not there when the client attempts to download it -- thus the HTTP 404 errors (0x80244019).

    You have three options:

You can point the WSUS server to the existing store with wsusutil movecontent E:\WSUS_Content move.log -skipcopy  -- but that probably won't work because when you copied the E:\WSUS_Content folder across the network you destroyed the ACLs in that folder tree that point to LOCAL accounts.

MOVEing the content from E:\WSUS_Content\WSUSContent\* to E:\WSUS\WSUSContent may also be problematic, as depending on the OS and the remaining ACLs on those files, they may or may not inherit the correct permissions from the ~\WSUSContent folder.

The better (safer) option, IMHO, would be to use ROBOCOPY to copy the ~\WSUSContent\* subfolders to E:\WSUS\WSUSContent, with the appropriate parameters to not retain old ACLs, which will ensure that the files inherit the correct ACLs from the E:\WSUS\WSUSContent folder. This is also a desirable option because since you report that the server has been "...run[ning] successfully ... for weeks." It's quite likely that there is VALID content in E:\WSUS\WSUSContent associated with the updates you have approved since the original migration.

For future reference, to 'migrate' a WSUS server - install the new servers as a replica of the old and let WSUS do the replication.

This is just a matter of not understanding the distinction between server synchronization and client download.

A CORRECTION:  We have a SAN, so all servers' disks (including this volume with the WSUS content) are on our SAN.   I had mistakenly thought the content was copied, but our SAN admin tells me he had simply unmapped a volume from the old WSUS server and remapped it to the new.   However, if I look at Security tab (NTFS perms) on \WSUSContent (the original one, not the empty one), or any subdir or file under that, I see this server's own name\Administrators with Full Control, and this server's own name\Users with Read.    I don't see the old server name mentioned anywhere here, which is good.

Also, you say:  It's quite likely that there is VALID content in E:\WSUS\WSUSContent associated with the updates you have approved since the original migration.  >>  NOPE...as I said, this is the one created during install... it's an empty folder.

Also, today I notice the E:\WSUS_Content\WSUSContent\ folder has filled up the hard drive. (59.9GB used and 1MB free).  While on the original WSUS server where this data came from is still just using it's original 37GB !    My co-worker's theory is that the new WSUS server may be so screwed up/confused that it's downloading the same updates it already has (basically in duplicate?).      A Cleanup via Options did nothing to help this.        Is it still worth trying the robocopy?      Or should I robocopy (but not ACL's) over from the original working server?    Or just best to blow the content folder away, uninstall WSUS and reinstall fresh?

     Answered

Well, it was the end of the day so I chose the 2nd option.   (deleted E:\WsusContent altogether and then set robocopy to run after hours to copy the contents(but not ACL's) of E:\Wsus_Content over from the original working server, to E:\WSUS\WsusContent.

Anything I'd need to do at this point?  Or just test it?

Lawrence, I'd followed Microsoft's own migration documents to the letter, in which I didn't see anything about what you say to: "install the new servers as a replica of the old and let WSUS do the replication" - so without an official MS document on this process to make me confident (including how to then retire the old server and make the new one the primary), I guess if this doesn't work I'll forget migration and do the last option (delete the content folder, uninstall WSUS and reinstall fresh, and manually set up the new server to match the old)   Anyway, we only have a few target groups, and no special users created - except what install creates.

P.S.     I did a manual synch and one time got:    Event ID 364 - Content file download failed. Reason: Error calling [kernel32.dll]:CreateDirectory(e:\WSUS_Content\WsusContent\07) Source File: Destination File:     NOTE THAT THIS E:\WSUS_CONTENT FOLDER IS THE ONE THAT I HAD DELETED.   So I ran the wsusutil movecontent command and changed it to E:\WSUS\WsusContent which seemed to clear this up.   Now WsusHealth is reporting OK now.

Update 5/3   Updates appear to be working fine at this point (both via GPO and from a non-domain attached PC with manually entered WSUS registry entries).  but we've only done some initial testing.
Hopefully we're out of the woods but I'll give it some more time.

Using replication to migrate a WSUS server is community-driven methodology; it does not come from Microsoft.

Unfortunately, because Microsoft is more interested in promoting the capabilities of migration "roles" from one Win2008 server to another, they've chosen to write this convoluted (and rarely successful) "Migration Guide" that includes a whole bunch of unnecessary manual steps that WSUS is already capable of doing fully automatically using built-in replication.
