Answered Auto download and notify for install

I have just installed WSUS on a 2012 server.  My 2008R2 clients show the shield in the system tray saying "you have updates to install" but my 2012 clients do not.  I have "Auto download and notify for install" set to "3 - Auto download and notify for install".

Is there somewhere else I need to set something so 2012 will have the same icon in the system tray?

    Thanks.

Maybe the 2012 clients don't have any updates to install?

What is displayed in the Windows Update applet?

Or, perhaps a more basic question -- is the System Tray configured to show this icon when applicable?

Can you provide some additional information that demonstrates that this is a problem and not just a normal indication?

wuapp.exe reports there are updates to install.  The systray is configured to show all notifications.  This is a problem for me because I'm not made aware there are updates to install unless I go into wuapp.exe.

To allow non-administrators to receive update notifications

1.In Group Policy Object Editor, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Update.

2.In the details pane, click Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications, and set the option.

    3.Click OK.

I am aware of this setting.  Setting it to anything changes nothing.  This setting doesn't really apply to me anyway, I'm an administrator.

Can someone confirm this is by design in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012?

    Hi,

Currently, it's works same in Windows 8 and Windows 2012. Just as mentioned by Ruby that reason of removing this feature is based on most of the users' feedbacks. If a notification were to be displayed, this is suppressed if the user is doing something important, especially when a user watching a movie or playing a game, or in the business environment being interrupted during a PowerPoint presentation.

We may have a try to test the tools mentiond in the thread provided. Thanks for your understanding.

Seems like that behavior should be configurable, not just removed.

    Silly silly silly Win8/Win2012!
