Updates download failed at client side..
- Hi,
We have WSUS 3.1 with near about 4400 clients. Recently we approved 16 updates (@ 29 June). Some of clients (count >300 ) shows 1/2 update(s) failed to download. even other clients successfully installed it. Actually this happens usually when we approve new updates & upto next week from approval this count goes down automatically i.e updates install automatically.logs at client side indicate Download failed error.
below is the log of my server -Program Files\Update Services\LogFiles\SoftwareDistribution.

Actually I can't reinstall or reconfigure server now. because of this probleam I did completly reinstalled WSUS 2 times, none of error was occoured during installation.(Now I have no answer to convey my manger :) )
With all respect... the answer to convey to your manager is that the BEST option is to REINSTALL the server (with WSUS v3.1). Reinstalling the server will take about an hour. Synchronization can be completed in an hour or two. No *content* needs to be transferred across the network, only the update metadata from the upstream server.
Also... I'm confused about your statement.. "I ... completely reinstalled WSUS 2 times...". I thought we were working with WSUS v3.1 systems (based on this statement in your original post):
We have WSUS 3.1 with near about 4400 clients.
Please clarify!

- Hi Sachin,
On one of the problematic client, please try the following steps:
1. Stop the Automatic Updates service and BITS service.
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
2. Delete “%windir%\softwaredistribution” directory.
3. Start the Automatic Updates service and BITS service. When these two services
have been started, they will auto-create “softwaredistribution” and its subfolder
at system directory.
net start wuauserv
net start bits
4. Stop the Cryptographic Services
5. Rename the C:\windows\System32\catroot2 folder
6. After the “%windir%\softwaredistribution” directory has been generated, please
let the client contact the WSUS server immediately.
wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow
7. After 15 minutes, please check the client to confirm whether it detects needed
updates.
If the problem still exists, please check %windir%\windowsupdate.log and post the error message in this thread.

- Hi Eric ,
Thanks for your reply..!! but This is not problem I am facing, I am worried about my server behavior like mentioned above that why update getting failed to download for saveral hrs & afterthat install automatically.by the way error count goes down 168 out of 344 sine last post. :)
Thanks,
Sachin. Sachin can you provide some background details about your WSUS environment?
How many WSUS Servers?
All 4400 clients on one server?
What is the network topology? (How many clients are remote? How many are local?)
What database service?
The error messages read like somebody has restored the database to the server.
Whatever it is, I agree this looks like a SERVER-side issue, not a client-side issue

The good news may be that these are WARNINGS, not errors, and will likely work themselves out.
As you've noted, you're down to 168 affected systems from 344 in 3 hours.

Microsoft MVP - Software Distribution (2005-2009)- Hi Lawrence,
Thanks for your interest..!!
My scenario,
1. Our Enterprise having multisite well connected AD infrastructure. My WSUS is downstream replica server which synchronize update approval from another server but download updates from Microsoft Site.
2. WSUS is using internal database & deploy updates to 4400 clients which are at same physical location. Updates synchronized successfully also.
3. This happens every time when new updates approved , clients shows download failed up to 3-4 days from approval & after that they download updates & install automatically.
4. There is no such situation at different site server where WSUS is having same settings.
Still Server showing logs same as last post….. L
Thanks,
Sachin. - Sachin, thank you for the background information.
Has this issue always happened with this replica server? Or did it start happening at some time after this replica server was first installed?
Because this is a replica server, the simple fix may be to strip and rebuild WSUS on the server with a new database. It's possible this is being caused by some set of data in the database that's confusing things. Truth be told, we could spend as much time (if not more) trying to troubleshoot the issue as it would to actually reinstall the server from scratch. And, since it is a replica server, there's no update approvals to be lost, since they're all stored on the upstream server.
In the meantime, while you ponder that option, I'd like to see the entries from the WindowsUpdate.log for one of the clients that was detecting and failing to download during the same timeframe (6/30 7:56am-8:13am). I'm continuing to think about other possible causes.
