Hello, I was hoping to get some information on rebuidling the wsus server with existing database files.

I am running windows 2003 R2 SP2 and use registry settings on the clients to connect back to wsus server. I have a copy of exisiting SUSDB.mdf and .ldf files from previous install but i did not properly detach them I just renamed the old folder to save them just in case. I would like to rebuild the server from scratch. Can you you point me to the right directions.

Another concern I have is that since I am using registry settings for clients to check for updates and had various different groups created on the old WSUS, how can I make sure when I rebuild the database I have the same old groups and clients report into their respective groups please? Many thanks for your assitance and advise.

Making them completely useless. Install a fresh WSUS server. This is covered in the Product Documentation.

You can't. You're starting from scratch. That means you have nothing.

If the original SQL server was properly shutdown (likely, if copying the database was not blocked due to open files) then in theory it should be possible to attach that database to a new SQL server. In theory.

In real-world, I agree with Lawrence on this one. Start over fresh.
