Thanks for your input. However, the KB article does not help; I find that this error happens in Outlook and Excel as well.
I am trying to repair office 2010 to see whether it helps.

Finally, this issue was caused by uninstalling Goolge Chrome, fix the problem using the following steps:
1. Install Google Chrome
2. Make the Google Chrome as the default browser, now hyper-links work in Office Word, Outlook and ...
3. Change the Internet Explorer as the default browser, hyper-links also work in Office Word, Outlook and ...
Thanks all for your input!

I found the solution to be much easier than that.
Go to Control Panel, then default programs, then set program access and computer defaults. Mine was set to custom so i switched it to Microsoft Windows. It then fixed my problem.
Hope this helps someone.

Hi David,
The solution you provided should be worked, however once I changed the " set program access and computer defaults" settings and clicked OK to apply, it changed back.
Thanks again!
Thanks,

thank you! thank you! This DID work for Outlook 2010.
I can't believe I had to re-install Google Chrome and agree for it to be the default and then, after closing, open IE and change the default browser to IE!
But, whatever it takes . . .
Thanks again!

Friday, October 07, 2011 8:42 PMThanks. This answer worked for me, after I restarted the computer. Not before.

打开IE,Tools->Internet Options->Programs->Set Programs->Set Program Access and computer defaults,
或者直接点开始图标,然后点Default Programs, Set Program Access and computer defaults,然后选Microsoft Windows.Restart the computer, then OK.
可能原因:
前几天装了一下Firefox 1.5, 安装后firefox不做提示就将默认浏览器设置为Firefox了。后来卸载了,可能Windows找不到默认的浏览器了。 -

Mind the warning about editing the registry, make a backup of the registry you will edit and start replacing the 'ChromeHTML' values by 'htmlfile' in HKCU\classes

This worked for me :) Thanks. Old Post but it still works today.
This error could happen. If you downloaded Google Earth and Google Earth will automatically install Google Chrome for you. If by chance you then Uninstalled or Deleted Chrome, and did not tell IE that its now the Default Browser again then that link problem will persist from office!
Thanks!

This answer worked for me! Thanks
I've exhausted all the possible answer to no avail. I installed chrome and it worked. I haven't installed Chrome in this computer, I'm just wondering why I have to do it just to get this problem fixed.
Many Thanks

- Start, click Run, type Regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.html
- Right click the value for the .html key and select Modify…
- Change the value from "ChromeHTML" to "htmlfile" (or from FireFoxHTML to htmlfile)
I actually had to search my registry and find all ocurences of "ChromeHTML" to fix that manually.
